If I filed married filing jointly in the past and will be doing the same this year, is there one Letter 6475 or two, one for me and one for my wife? I thought (most likely mistakenly) since we filed jointly, it would be one letter.
If it is two (one for myself and one for my wife) do I enter the TOTAL amount (my wife's amount added to my amount) on the program where it asked how much stimulus money I received for the 3rd stimulus?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If you file a joint return you enter the total you got combined in one amount.
There will probably be two and the program allows both to be reported.
When I entered it, it does not give me an option to enter my wife's separate from mine.
It asks "Does this match the amount on Letter(s) for you and" your spouse?
"Enter the exact payment amounts you received-if they aren't exact, the IRS may delay your return. If you or " your spouse "got multiple payments for either round, enter the total, or 0 if you didn't get a payment."
"Enter your total thrid-round payment (issued March '21 - May '21) as it appears on your Letter 6475 from the IRS."
If you file a joint return you enter the total you got combined in one amount.
From my understanding from reading other posts, the total amount of stimulus for the year is divided in half between you and your spouse correct? Such as if the total amount was $2,800, I will get a letter for $1,400 and my spouse will get a letter for $1,400?
So far only I received Letter 6475 and not my wife.
It is slowly making sense if this is the case because the amount on my letter is half of what we got on our third stimulus payment. I just wanted to make sure and file properly. I do not want more attention from the IRS.
Ok ... even if you never get the second letter ... if you look at your records and you see that you got $2800 combined PLEASE just enter that amount in the program so it doesn't try to give you a credit you should not get.
What is the actual answer to this question? It's so confusing. I got a letter addressed to me and my wife got one addressed to her. They both show the same amount. I can't tell how much we got because my online banking won't let me go back that far. Do I add the total on both letters? Or is the total for each letter the total I'm supposed to put in? Very vague instructions. For reference here our payment line shows $2100.00 on EACH letter. So I put in $2100 or do I add both letters to make it $4200?
Yes, add the two amounts of $2,100 together and enter $4,200 as the amount received.
IRS has been sending taxpayers Letter 6475 reporting one half to each spouse if a joint return was filed.
My wife and I both received this letter, each stating we received 4900 but that is not the correct amount. We only received one checked issued to us in March of 1400.
Which letter are you referring to ? The 6419 or the 6475 ?
The 6475 shows the amount of the third stimulus payment you could have gotten which was a max of $1400 per person listed on the 2020 return so did you have 7 people listed on the 2020 return ? (1400 x 7= 9800 and 1/2 would be 4900).
6475, In march we were issued a stimulus check for 1400 (with my wife and My name on it), we have 7 people listed on 2020 tax return.
WHERE in turbotax do I enter the amounts that are on my Letter 6475. I already filed my taxes, and of course, got Letter 6475 today from the IRS. When I go back to try to amend or make changes, I do not see anywhere to enter the $2,100 on my Letter 6475 into Turbotax. Help?
First if you already filed there is nothing you need to do now ... if you did not enter the correct amount of the third stimulus payment that you got in advance when asked then the IRS will correct the error if your return has an amount on line 30 of the form 1040.
And if you were married and filed a joint return both years then you should each have gotten one of those "reminder letters". https://blog.turbotax.intuit.com/tax-planning-2/irs-letters-6419-and-6475-for-the-advanced-child-tax...
To amplify this, TT Deluxe only asks if you received the "Third Stimulus Payment". We had not, so I indicated "No" but it does not prompt for anything further on Letter 6475. I noticed it then provided the full $5,600 as a credit, which is incorrect. I had to go back and indicate "Yes" to the 3rd Stimulus payment (even though we had not received) and then was allowed to input the $2,100 we both had received from Letter 6475. TT should be better at this.

When you selected No for receiving the 3rd stimulus this screen was not shown?
