If married filing jointly is there a $80 cost?

It depends.  You are charged $80 not because you are filing Married Filing Jointly.  If you are filing TurboTax Deluxe online, at the beginning of the program, you are asked to check all the situations that apply to you from the selections, whether you are a returned or new customer, very likely your situation in 2019 cannot be supported by the tax forms in the TurboTax Free Edition.  Especially with the new tax law reform, Tax Cut and Job Acts TCJA, you might need to use new tax forms to claim the same deductions, credits, or forms of income. Some of the situations have been transformed into TurboTax Deluxe and TurboTax Live Deluxe, instead of in Free Edition.

Why did TurboTax charge me $40in taxes for a basic package which offered $40 sale price? I am head of household, so why was the $80 the total price taken from my refund?

@aorbro  Did you choose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund instead of paying  before you filed?   If so, that added a $40 refund processing fee to have your fees deducted by a third party bank.

Do you have any other TurboTax fees being deducted from your tax refund? If you selected to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, there may be an additional fee for the Refund Processing Service. 

You can view a breakdown of your TurboTax charges by signing in to your online return. Once you have signed in and selected to continue your return, select Tools from the My Account drop-down list in the upper right corner. In the pop-up window, select My Fees to get a breakdown of your TurboTax charges.
