TurboTax will do this for you. If you are using TurboTax Self-Employed, as you walk through the steps you will see Income and Expenses.  You will list your mileage and other expenses in the appropriate category under the expense section.

How are you trying to do it on your own?  Like file a paper return or you just want to know how to enter it on your own?

If you are using the online version to get to where you would enter your mileage click the following:

  • Federal
  • Income and Expenses
  • Review next to your business
  • Review again on the next screen by your Business name
  • Scroll down then click Add expenses for this work
  • Put a check mark in the box next to vehicle expenses and any other items you see that you want to claim

What version of TurboTax do you have.  You're trying to enter information for a small business.  You will need the Self Employed Online version, or the Home & Business Desktop version.

You will then be able to enter all of these expenses on your own.

If you are using the online version in order to enter the expenses you would need to upgrade to TurboTax Self-Employed.

Where did you enter the extra money you made?  Under what "category"?

It depends.  Even if this is a side job, it is still self-employment income if your intent is to make i money. You might consider reporting this a hobby income. The IRS defines a hobby as an activity: You do purely for the love of it, regardless of the cost and you expect no profit in return.

Just to clarify, how much income did you earned from your outwork this year?

You have two ways to report this. You can report this as Hobby Income but the federal government does not allow hobby expenses to be deducted. Some states still allow this however depending on the state where you live. To report as hobby income,

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account.
  2. Click on Federal Taxes tab.
  3. Choose Wages and Income.
  4. Scroll down to Less Common Income and click Start to to right of Miscellaneous Income.
  5. Click Start to right of Hobby income and expenses.

If you wish to claim deductions against this income, you will need to declare this as self-employment income to take advantage of the deductions.
