I received a 1099-R from a 401K roll over and contributed the total amount to another 401K. How do I enter on my taxes?

Hi! This article might help. It shows how to enter a 1099-R in TurboTax.

You enter the Form 1099-R that you received using the following steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “1099-R” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to 1099-R
  • Click on the blue “Jump to 1099-R” link

After you enter the Form 1099-R, if the distribution code alone does not indicate that the distribution was rolled over to another retirement account, then the key is in the answers to the follow-up questions you will see.

Be sure to Continue through all the screens and follow-up questions until you get back to the main income screen.  Here is the general process:

  • One of the first questions should be What did you do with the money?
  • Choose I moved the money to another retirement account (or returned it to the same retirement account)
  • Then, choose I rolled over all this money....
  • Continue through the remaining questions until you are back to the 1099-R Entries summary page

If it was rolled from one 401k plan to another 401k plan, then there should be no tax consequence on your return.
