NOOOOO.... do not refile with the SS# ... this will only mess things up and delay things even further. Not sure why you applied for the ITIN when the SS# was already in the works. You should have just waited ... now you cannot amend the federal return for the 2019 tax year. If you still need to file a state return then when you open the program go to the MY INFO section and enter the SS# so it flows to the state interview. Then complete the state return, the Review tab and finally choose to mail in the state in the FILE tab ... doing this will populate the correct forms form mailing and produce the state filing instruction sheet.
AFTER the federal return has finished processing and before you file next year's returns ...
You need to notify the IRS, so it can combine all of your tax records under one identification number. This is from IRS website:
What do I do when I am assigned a social security number (SSN)?
Once you receive a SSN, you must use that number for tax purposes and discontinue using your ITIN. It is improper to use both the ITIN and the SSN assigned to the same person to file tax returns. It is your responsibility to notify the IRS so we can combine all of your tax records under one identification number. If you do not notify the IRS when you are assigned a SSN, you may not receive credit for all wages paid and taxes withheld which could reduce the amount of any refund due. You can visit a local IRS office or write a letter explaining that you have now been assigned a SSN and want your tax records combined. Include your complete name, mailing address, and ITIN along with a copy of your social security card and a copy of the CP 565, Notice of ITIN Assignment, if available. The IRS will void the ITIN and associate all prior tax information filed under the ITIN with the SSN. Send your letter to:
Internal Revenue Service
Austin, TX 73301 - 0057
Do not file another tax return under any circumstances. You should never have filed in the first place if you knew your spouse was eligible for Social Security number, you should have waited even if that meant you were late. At this point, you will have to wait for the IRS to issue the ITIN and process your tax return, then, you will need to send them a letter informing them of the change from the ITIN to the SSN.
Next year, you probably won’t be able to e-file either since your spouse will have never filed before with the SSN.
