I exported a .tax2021 file from my Intuit account and I tried to import my .tax2021 file into my new Intuit account but I get an error saying the file is currupted. How?

Volvo girl. Please read the faq. They clearly state that you can import pdf or tax file to “jumpstart” your return. But when following the steps I mentioned above, we get corruption errors. How can I get non corrupted .tax file exported from TurboTax online?

volvogirl can you explain what corrupted file even means in this situation ? I’m not sure if you work for intuit or are a developer but it would be great if you could explain why the .tax2021 file is corrupted when exported from TurboTax online

It's easy to transfer last year's return, and depending on your situation, the transfer could be:

  • Automatic—which will transfer all of your info without you having to do anything extra.
  • From a PDF—which will transfer your personal info and your AGI to give you a head start.
  • From a .tax file—which will transfer all of your info in a few short steps.

No, I don't know about it.  I'm just a volunteer here.  But if you can transfer from a pdf it only transfers very basic info like just your name, ssn, address & AGI.  Nothing else.  The FAQs don't explain it very well.  So I wouldn't bother trying to transfer any pdf from anywhere.

Don't know if this will work, but you can OPEN the .tax2021 file you downloaded from Online in the 2021 Desktop program.  Then save it as a Desktop .tax2021 file.  That may let 2022 Online transfer it.  So if you want to buy the 2021 program or ask support for a download.

But Mac may have more snags than Windows.  Since you want to use the Online version, I suppose you could find a Windows computer like a friend's or family and try to download the .tax2021 and then transfer it?  Might be worth a shot.

I have been importing K-1 data to TurboTax (.txf files) from TaxPackageSupport.com for years using Premier or Home&Business versions on a mac.  It appears that Intuit has decided to disallow that function this year...not sure why.

I'm having the same issue with what I believe is a very common scenario. I got a divorce in 2022 therefore need to file as a single under my SS# vs. a joint that was under his SS# as the primary tax ID. I opened a new account, saved the .tax file from the old account to my mac, and tried to import it to my new account. I get the same "corrupted file" error message. The file will upload correctly to the old account that it was originally associated with. Therefore, it's an erroneous error message. The real frustration is that this is clearly a design flaw for a very common occurrence. It's extremely frustrating to lose the benefit of using turbotax for consecutive years based on this oversight.

You can't transfer from a Joint return to Single.  Here's some info.....

If you used Turbo Tax last year you should start a brand new account for yourself and not transfer from last year.  You can not remove a spouse or switch the order of names.

Online is only good for 1 return.  But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts.   How to start another return in the Online version

If your tax file is encrypted or password protected, you will get this error when trying to import to TurboTax online. Open the tax file in your desktop program. From the File menu select Password (windows) or Encrypt (MAC). Remove the password/encryption. Re- save your tax file without the password. Now you can upload it into TurboTax online.
