How do I overcome Error Code 119?

I saved both my 2021 and 2022 tax documents as Adobe Acrobat files on my laptop, but when I tried to access them today, I couldn't open them due to Error Code119.   How can I get copies of my filed forms?  I need them to present to my financial advisor.   Thank you!

What type of files are you trying to open?  You need to look at the file extension.

If the file extension is .tax2021 or .tax2022 those are tax data files which can only be opened by the TurboTax software for the tax year of the file.  If you are trying to open those file types with the correct TurboTax software and get error code 119, that is telling you that the files are corrupt and cannot be opened.

Or do the files have a file extension of .pdf?  Those files can be opened by any compatible PDF viewer, such as Adobe Reader.  They cannot be opened by the TurboTax software.

They have the .tax2021 and .tax2022 file extension.   Does that mean the corruption is due to something in the Turbotax software?   Can corrupted files be fixed?   Thanks!

No...the extensions with .tax2021 and .tax2022

Those are NOT PDF files, those are the datafiles that the desktop software uses to fully complete all the forms needed for a tax return.  If you can't find a file that ends in .pdf for those tax returns, then you don't ahve the PDF files yet

1)  If you have been using the "Desktop" software on your computer, you start up the software for each year first, then you open those datafiles using that desktop software, then go up to the "File" menu and create and save a PDF file of your tax return for you to print out for others to see.

'

2)  If you have been using the "Online" software, then you need to log into yoru account and download the PDF file for each year separately.   The 2022 tax return PDF file would likely be just the filing copy (at this point in time....until late Nov or Dec).  The 2021 tax return PDF file will be HUGE, and include all the backup worksheets, and you probably need to only print out the first pages...i.e. the 1040, and schedules for the Federal section of the PDF file.

_______

If you DID use the "Online" software for 2021 and 2022...be sure to download those PDF files ASAP.....your access to those files will shut down completely very soon for the software changeover to 2023 tax forms, and you will have no access to them again until, perhaps, late November.

Unfortunately, it's when I try to open the data files using the Turbo Tax desktop software, that's when I get the Error code 119.   It won't get me to the data files so that I can save them as .pdf files.    Not only that, when I go to the Intuit website and enter into my account, there is no record of Turbo Tax filing my tax returns for 2021 or 2022, even though they did, and I have the emails to prove it.  I will probably have to call and talk to a live person at Intuit to get this resolved.  I can't not have copies of my 2021 and 2022 taxes.

Yeah....too bad you didn''t create PDF files at the time you originally e-filed them.

We keep pushing people to do that but many don't listen.

And.....correct....your Online Intuit account does not have a record of any filings you may have made with the Desktop software....it might have a record of a payment you might have made to file a state software set (other than NY), but no actual filing record...that's all kept in the desktop software itself.

_______

A couple other things that may or may not affect you.

 1) If the .taxyyyy datafiles you are attempting to open, were originally saved directly to a usb flash drive from the software...those files are commonly corrupted.  Always save them directly to your main system hard drive, then just copy-paste them to the flash drive from the main hard drive for a backup.

  2) Likewise, if you now have those .taxyyyy datafiles on a remote or flashdrive, copy-past them to a known location on your hard drive before attempting to open them with the TTX desktop software.

3)  If you have any state files as a part of that .taxyyyy datafile, make sure your desktop software has that/those state(s) installed already before attempting to open the datafile.

4)...and make sure the software is all fully updated first too,

_____

Other than those items...nothing else I can think of...unless you do have a backup copy of those files stored somewhere, you might be able to recover them that way.  (I put extra backup copies of all my tax files, both .taxyyyy and .pdf files, on a usb flashdrive, in my bank safe deposit box every year)

Try updating the program and then download any state programs you used.  Go to top menu item Online - Check for updates.  You may have to start a fake return to download the state.
