I am having THE WORST time trying to access my documents.... this is largely why I stopped using turbo tax!
I had an account a long time ago, and then had access issues. I guess at one point when I purchased turbo tax again, it created a second account for me. Both accounts are tied to my email so when I log in, I get both usernames to choose from.
One of the accounts I can access is fine, but it's my other account I need access into because I am trying to see if my taxes from 2014 and earlier are filed there. When I select it, it gives me the option to enter a password and NO MATTER WHAT I do, it tells me my account is locked. I select the option to change the password and it gives me the option to verify my identity, which I did, but never gave me the option to reset any passwords related to it. My 1st account I can log into just fine, but this second account I cannot!
I attempted to call, and calling is a JOKE. The automated system wants to send me password recovery links, but none of them are related to this 2nd account I am trying to access. No matter how long I wait, it tells me I am locked out for 14 minutes. I finally made it through the support line, and the tech cannot unlock my account? So I was sitting on hold for 15 minutes at a time, just for my account TO REMAIN LOCKED.
The agent, hung up on me and because I am showing a recent call into the system, I cannot make it back through to a person.
This is the worst experience and is very much the reason why I left turbo tax. It's unfortunate that with how large turbo tax is, they will not care about this experience hence why it is impossible to contact them and why they will never improve this.
How can I access this account to check for these documents so I can be done with turbo tax entirely?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If you are looking for a 2014 or earlier return you are wasting your time. TurboTax and the IRS save returns for seven years, and then they are gone.
You have to access your own account and/or print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

Start a 2025 return online and enter some personal information so that the menu on the left opens up and lets you access your past year returns.
Many people have multiple TT accounts and forget how to access them. Log out of the account you are in now.
Or did you use the desktop version of TurboTax? If so, the files are on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.
You can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $30, an actual copy of your tax return.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURNS !
EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records. That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.
In order to transfer a past year return to the new return you need the tax file
NOTE: TurboTax and the IRS save returns for seven years. Returns older than seven years are purged.
Hi!
So this is why I need access to the account because I need those documents... the laptop I have from that time period is dead and my paper copies are gone. Requesting a transcript from the IRS is an option however based on the selections, it doesn't look like any of them will offer the level of detail I need. I am trying to verify how many times, if any, I claimed the AOTC in prior years. When I log into turbo tax on the account I can access, it doesn't go back from enough. The other account, which shows the last time I accessed it was in 2017, is probably the account I would've filed older returns under but I cannot access this account!!!
Your returns from 2014 are gone----gone. They have been purged. You cannot recover them in TT online.
