How can i go back to change info on my return that cause my return to be rejected by irs?

Step 1: Check your email

The solution to some e-file rejections is as close as your Inbox. Look for an ACTION NEEDED! email from turbotax@intuit.com and follow the instructions.

Didn't get an email? Open your return to get the rejection reason and proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Search for a solution

If you didn't get an email, search on the reject message or code for instructions on how to fix.

Here are links to solutions for the top 10 IRS rejections:

  1. IND-031-04: The AGI or Self-select PIN from last year for the first taxpayer doesn't match IRS records
  2. IND-032-04: The spouse's AGI or Self-select PIN from last year doesn't match IRS records
  3. FW2-502: The name or EIN for an employer on your W-2 doesn't match IRS records
  4. R0000-504-02: The name or Social Security number for a dependent on your return doesn't match IRS records
  5. R0000-500-01: The name or Social Security number for the first taxpayer doesn't match IRS records
  6. R0000-507-01: A dependent on your return has already been claimed (or claimed themselves) on another return
  7. IND-181-01: The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) for the first taxpayer on your return is missing
  8. R0000-503-02: The secondary taxpayer's Social Security number and last name don't match IRS records. The IRS receives this information from the Social Security Administration (SSA)
  9. IND-516: If the Primary Taxpayer is claimed as an exemption in the return, then the Primary SSN must not be the same as a Dependent SSN on another return
  10. R0000-902-01: Taxpayer TIN in the Return Header must not be the same as a TIN of a previously accepted electronic return for the return type and tax period indicated in the tax return

Step 3: Open and fix your return

If you haven't already opened your rejected return, now's the time to do so.

Follow any "fix-it" directions you see in your program (not all rejections will have this). Otherwise, navigate to the program area to address the cause of the rejection, then proceed to the final step.

Time-saving Tip: If what you originally entered is correct, you won't be able to e-file. There's probably a data mismatch at the government, a dependent that's already been claimed, or some other situation beyond your control that prevents your return from being e-filed.

In these cases, go ahead and file a paper return, rather than wasting your time trying to "fix" something you can't fix.

Step 4: Re-file your return

After completing the previous 3 steps, you're ready to re-file.

In your TurboTax program, click File in the upper-right area (mobile devices: tap in the upper-left corner to open the side menu, then tap File).

Follow the onscreen instructions to either e-file your return or file by mail.

Note: If you get the same rejection a second time (or third, or fourth, or fifth...) and you see no mistakes on your return, select the file by mail option to paper-file your return. Sometimes, returns keep getting rejected even though there's nothing wrong with them (data mismatches, dependents already claimed, and so forth).

In these cases, we recommend paper-filing by mail rather than wasting additional time trying to "fix" something that is beyond your control.

Wheres the link to the program to fix it?!

How can i go back to change info on my return that cause my return to be rejected by irs?

It is too late to fix a 2019 return ... so if the return was rejected then you must print, ink sign and mail the return.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2017, 2018 and 2019 is permanently closed.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2017, 2018, or 2019 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s)

https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.

If you are getting a refund, there is not a penalty for filing past the deadline.  If you owe taxes, the interest/penalties will be calculated by the IRS based on how much you owe and when they receive your return and payment. The IRS will bill you for this; it will not be calculated by TurboTax.

If you want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand.  Here are some basic forms.....

Here is the 2019 1040 return

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf

or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors,

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s.pdf

2019 Instructions https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf

2019 EIC and Tax Tables  https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040tt.pdf

2019 Schedules 1-3

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s1.pdf

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s2.pdf

https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s3.pdf

Don’t forget your state.  And you will have to print and mail your returns.  So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

You can finish using desktop software.  If you already paid your Online TurboTax fees you can get a download from customer support for free.

So you don't need to start over from scratch ...  download the .taxfile from the online system now so you can open it in the downloaded program.

How can i go back to change info on my return that cause my return to be rejected by irs?

Why did it reject?  If it was for the wrong AGI you don't need to fix that.  AGI is only needed to efile and it is too late to efile.  If you need to fix something else you need to finish in the Desktop program. You need to download the .tax2019 and open it in the Desktop program.  You need a full Windows or Mac computer to install the Desktop program.
