Follow-up requirements after e-filing

There is conflicting information about what to do after e-filing our Federal tax return. In TurboTax, it says to print and mail additional forms. The link that explains this step says I don't have to do it ... unless TurboTax says to do it.

I'm confused. Please help!! Do I or don't I have to do anything additional? I've never had to do anything like this in the past.

And, does anyone know how to reach TurboTax via phone? I found a number, supposedly from TurboTax, that was obviously a scam. The person who answered wanted to take control of my computer. No thanks!!!

If you e-filed there is nothing else you need to do unless the IRS requests information from you at some point.

Did you e-file?  Did you click a big orange button that said “Transmit my returns now?”

When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say that your return was submitted.  The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected.  If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

If the IRS accepted it, what does it say here?  

https://www.irs.gov/refunds         

  Or does your account say “Ready to Mail?”

Note:  If it says “Ready to Mail” or “Printed” that means YOU have to mail it yourself.  TurboTax does not mail your tax return for you.

The purpose of e-filing a tax return is so that you do not have to print and mail any forms.

Only in rare circumstances would it be necessary to mail certain forms after e-filing your tax return.  Usually if you have dozens, hundreds or thousands of stock sales.

Look at your Filing Instructions page.  It will tell you if any forms need to be mailed (uncommon)
