How do I file for free for past years ?

You cannot file for free using TurboTax for tax year 2018 thru 2016.  The TurboTax online edition which include the Free edition are only for tax year 2019.

To complete and file a tax return for prior tax years (2018 thru 2016) using TurboTax you would need to purchase, download and install on a personal computer, Win or Mac, one of the desktop editions for each tax year needed from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/

Prior year tax returns can only be printed and mailed, they cannot be e-filed.  Use separate envelopes for each tax year when mailing multiple year tax returns.

I'm trying to get passed the following screen and pay for turbo tax but it will not let me.   You don’t qualify to file free

Based on the information you provided, you do not meet the qualifications required to use IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax. The reason is:

Your adjusted gross income is more than $36,000, and you do not qualify for the Earned Income Credit (EIC).

If you don’t qualify or your taxes are too complex for IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax please return to IRS.gov to choose a free file product.

If you are unable to use the TurboTax Free File Program due to your AGI and wish to continue using TurboTax, then you will need to go to the TurboTax website for the online editions

Go to this TurboTax website, choose the edition, click on Start for Free and then sign onto the account with your User ID and password used on the Free File Program - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/online/

However, you do have the option to use another tax prep service on the IRS website that does has a different AGI limit then TurboTax Free File Program - https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/

This does not work. It automatically directs you back to turbotax free.

Your question does not have enough detail to assist you properly.  However the thread is discussing how to file for Free with Turbo Tax.  When preparing your return using Turbotax software you always start for free.  The software determines your eligibility for Free File based on the information submitted.
