Error Code IND 517-02 and I only list one dependent

I keep receiving this error code when i go to e-file.  My understanding is the last numbers relate to the order the dependents are listed, i only have one child claimed as a dependent, how can i have IND 517-02?

IND 517 can indicate the dependent has already been claimed on someone else's return or the dependent claimed themselves on their return.  Check the link below for additional information:

You will need to file a paper return because there is no way to get around the e-file system once your dependent has already filed and claimed themselves.  Paper file your return with your dependent included.

This article will give instruction on how to print and mail your return.

Your dependent will need to amend their return to indicate someone else is claiming them.

See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.

Can we get IP PINs for both the dependent and the parents and refile using efile ?

Yes. You only need it for the dependent.

If a dependent mistakenly indicated no one can claim them and causes a rejection of the parent's return, the IRS now allows the first-listed (primary) taxpayer (such as the parent) to get an IP PIN and still successfully efile and avoid having to file a return on paper.   Your dependent will need to amend their return to indicate someone else is claiming them. See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending.

The IP Pin will change each and every year. This is an Identity Protection Pin.

You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.

Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:

  1. Log in and open your return ("Take me to my return")
  2. Once the return is open, then go to the Federal Taxes tab.
  3. Subtab Other Tax Situations
  4. Scroll down to Other Return Info.
  5. Choose Identity Protection PIN and Start (or Revisit.)
  6. Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

Or another way:

  1. Open your return if not already open.  ("Take me to my return.")
  2. Once the return is open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose TOOLS.
  3. In the Tools window choose TOPIC SEARCH.
  4. Enter IP PIN without quotes.
  5. In the selection list highlight IP PIN and click GO.
  6. Next screen asks:  "Did you or any of your dependents get an IP PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"

There is a new procedure the IRS started last year for TY2024. It allows returns that claim dependents who have already been claimed on another taxpayer’s return to be efiled.

Since your son already claimed himself, your return is getting rejected. You can get an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) for him, enter this on your return and re-file electronically.

Error Code IND 517-02 and I only list one dependent

My dependent is under 18 and online IP PIN is not possible and it takes too much time to get via the phone or in person (4 to 6 weeks) and it'll be too late for filing time.

I have an IP PIN, can I efile with just my IP PIN ? or am I now stuck with paper filing ?

Yes, if you're the parent claiming a dependent who incorrectly filed as a non-dependent, you can still Efile with your current year IP PIN.  Your dependent still needs to Amend their return.

Error Code IND 517-02 and I only list one dependent

This worked for me, my daughter mistakenly filed her taxes and did not mark that she can be claimed as a dependent on another's taxes (12a). When I tried efile, of course it failed with this error code.

We had my daughter amend her return and e-file. I got an IP PIN for myself, tried to get one for my daughter, but she's not 18 so we couldn't. Just to be sure, we got an IP PIN for my wife. Entered them into TurboTax and refiled using efile and I got a confirmation now that the federal return was accepted. WHEW !!!

Now waiting for State to be accepted, they take just a little longer. Finger's crossed.
