I am doing my daughter's taxes. After I put her W-2 info in Turbo Tax it showed she was getting a $1,078 refund I started in the deductions section and got to the EIC section. Her refund dropped to $289? She did not qualify for a credit? Why did her refund get reduced by $800? I deleted the entire tax return and started over with the same result.

We cannot see your screen or the tax return you are working on. We do not know what other information you entered for your daughter. If she can be claimed as someone else's dependent then she cannot receive earned income credit. Are you /can you claim her? What other income -- if any----did she have besides the income on the W-2?
What is on line 27a of her Form 1040? How about line 35a? or line 37?

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

Not looking to receive the credit which she does not qualify for anyway. In 2019 she made $14500; this year $16200. She is being claimed by me since she is a full student in college. Her only income is as a waitress part time job. Her 1040 in 2019 only goes to line 24. Like I said earlier, I finished her Income section in TurboTax and her refund showed $1078, I let the program walk me thru the deductions section because she has uniform expenses for her job. When I clicked thru the EIC tab, her refund dropped to $289.
Since she is a dependent the EIC should not be part of it at all. Is she a W2 employee? Then job expenses are no longer deductible. So that shouldn't affect it. Try not entering them. Maybe you are selecting to take Itemized Deductions instead of the Standard Deduction but the Itemized Deductions are less.
You might need to print out or preview the return when you see the higher refund. Then print it again when you get the lower amount to compare. Which lines changed?
Before filing, You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return
OK I will.
I printed them out and discovered that Turbo Tax was preloading the EIC credit into the refund number. Once I went to the deductions section and answered no, it came out. Thanks.
Uh, you never said how old she is. Does she still qualify as your dependent? Is she UNDER 24? It must not think she is a dependent. Did you check the box under My Info that says she can be claimed on someone else's return?
She is 22 and the block for us claiming her as a dependent is checked.
