You don't have to do so. You have choices; use one of the Online versions of TurboTax or use another income tax prep product. Both H&R Block and TaxAct support Windows 10.
@m12345$$!!6 That should not affect running 2024 on Windows 10. What exactly is happening?
If you can’t update your Windows program try doing a Manually update

@m12345$$!!6 I read you post more closely. So you did get into 2024 without updating? Have you turned off updates? As soon as I install the Windows Desktop program and it updates the first time then I go to Online-Updater Preferences and select Ask me before getting updates.
Oh and see if you need any Windows 10 (TEN) system updates. Those can affect it too.
I just pulled up Turbotax Desktop 2024, followed by Turbotax Business Desktop 2024. Both last used in April 2025. Both went through fairly lengthy updates. Upon running the application, a popup appeared advising of the end of W10 support, and stating "This change doesn't affect TurboTax Desktop 2024 or prior versions", and advising that TT2025 and beyond will _not_ be supported. The advisory was dismissable, and I had no trouble opening the last returns submitted.
JADP.
Tried 2023 and 2024. Both updated with no problems.
In fact, Microsoft has not dropped support for Windows 10. They're still offering paid support. Intuit has even responded to Microsoft's clarification and doubled down, saying that Windows 10 will not be supported in TurboTax 2025. This is unfortunate. There's no technical reason to prevent backward compatibility, so I can only assume that Intuit has made a deal with the devil (Microsoft).
I've been buying TurboTax since 1993, but I will not buy it anymore if they do not let me run it under Windows 10. I primarily use Linux, but I have a set of Windows VMs with all of my previous TurboTax software installations. As Windows 11 requires at TPM, and most hypervisors don't emulate one very well, I'm left with no choice but to find an alternative.
I think Intuit is a pawn here, and Microsoft is using their "relationship" to leverage more W11 adoption. I think it will backfire.
Win 11 VMs should be viable, I don't know the technical details but others who do have reported getting Turbotax running on VM just fine.
Otherwise yes just switch to some other s/w at this point if you don't want to use online, Intuit's direction is clear and this decision unlikely to backfire at all, desktop s/w is only 1% of Intuit revenues and in decline, probably in it''s final years.
Great at least I have options .... Do either of those read TurboTax files so I can transfer info from previous years returns?
When I open TurboTax 2024 or 2023 I get the "Do you want to update" prompt, I click yes, then allow the program to run and for a brief millisecond I see a small update window which immediately disappears. I check task manager and it's not running. Something is blocking the update from running. I was assuming that the latest updates were Windows 11 only .... I am running 0patch to keep my Windows 10 updated ... I turned it off and tried installing again ... and nothing. Over the years this has only happened once .... during a TT2023 update ... the problem was acknowledged by TT and fixed....bizarre. I may reach out the 0patch team and ask them if perhaps one of their patches is interfering with the update process.
Yeah .. just let us run TT on Windows 10. "At your own risk". Ridiculous.
Somebody else apparently had the same problem several weeks ago. FWIW, I tried updating 2023 and 2024 and had absolutely no problem with either year. The updates progressed like they did for the past 25 years.
Statistics just out:
500-million-pc-users-are-not-upgrading-to-windows-11-and-that-s-a-big-problem. Is TT listening and reading ?

Probably either they're not or they don't care. Regardless, the number stuck on Windows 10 is closer to 1 billion, but that is the number of machines on the operating system.
There are many people, myself included, who have Windows 11 machines AND Windows 10 machines, the latter of which (in a lot of cases) cannot be upgraded due to hardware requirements.
At any rate, the numbers stated far exceed the number of taxpayers filing 1040 variants who use TurboTax to do so and that number is far, far lower considering you don't need any particular operating system to use any online version of TurboTax.
I am now convinced that TT wants everyone to migrate to doing taxes on-line. Just received an email from TT because I had been an It's Deductible user which they discontinued in October. They offered a discount on TT products to make up for that. I discovered the discount only applied to the on-line products. Wonder how long before they drop desktop software completely?

Same, but I really don't expect it to be around 5 years from now, at least not in its present form. The amount of profit they're foregoing with the DIY desktop model (without ancillary services) is fairly large when compared to the online versions.
