If one of my dependents starts working before the end of the tax year...let's say October or November of 2023. What are the rules for claiming or excluding him/her as a dependent on my 2023 tax return? Thank you!

If the dependent is your qualifying child and otherwise meets the requirements to be your dependent, you can still claim your child as a dependent for 2023, even if the child has a job and earns income. Your child may need to file a tax return of his/her own, depending on how much they make or whether any taxes are withheld that can be refunded. For 2023, if a dependent earns more than $13,850 or has unearned income such as interest or dividends of more than $1,250, then they are required to file their own tax return.
If the dependent is not your qualifying child, the dependent must have gross income less than $4,700 in 2023 and meet all the other requirements of a dependent.
The requirements for a qualifying child or qualifying dependent are lengthy, but here's a link to those requirements:
If the child is under the age of 19 then they probably can be claimed by you as a dependent under the Qualifying Child rules.
To be a Qualifying Child -
1. The child must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendant of any of them.
2. The child must be (a) under age 19 at the end of the year, (b) under age 24 at the end of the year and a full-time student or (c) any age and permanently and totally disabled.
3. The child must have lived with you for more than half of the year. Temporary absences while away at college are considered living with you.
4. The child must not have provided more than half of his or her own support for the year.
5. If the child meets the rules to be a qualifying child of more than one person, you must be the person entitled to claim the child as a qualifying child.
6. The child must be a U.S. citizen or U.S., Canada or Mexico resident for some portion of the year.
7. The child must be younger than you unless disabled.
Thank you DoninGA! How about if this dependent is not considered a child? In their 20s
Sorry DoninGA! I meant to say...how about if this dependent does not fall into any of these cases? An adult in this case.
