@pdoudar I’m an old timer too, 72. I’ve used Turbo Tax since it started too. When you installed the CD you still had to go online to update it. It's only the method you use to install it. The last couple years when I bought the CD I used the download method to install it. But last year for 2023 I bought the download from Costco online. Installed it real fast. It was the same as the CD. Most of the laptops and computers now don't have a CD drive. And I had to get a new laptop with Windows 10 to run Turbo Tax starting for 2022. You can copy the download installation file to a CD or to a thumb usb drive. It will be alright. You can get used to it.
Since you now have to log into an Intuit Account all your downloads and licenses are listed there (even if you bought it from somewhere else) so if you need to download to install it again or install on another computer, even on the other operating system (Windows, Mac).
dearest,
this is exactly what all these tech savey people tell me , and respectfully, i find it very condescending. Its so easy to do this and so easy to do that, then they make you a fool when you click on something and end up downloading a virus. Yes, I am terrified of downloading anything now, and I get very frustrated with companies that push me to download their apps on my cell phone. Cant even go to a restaurant now without someone telling me to scan a QR Code for the menu. Why cant I have a regular menu? Why cant I put real dimes and quarters into a parking meter? Why do I get bombarded with customer service surveys? Why do they make me accept 50 page user agreements ? Why cant I have a turbotax CD and just use it anonymously?
Thank you, Phil for your first post. Well explained.
And Volvogirl’s info is very helpful.
Thank you both.
Good luck to all of us for 2024 returns!
I do NOT have a reliable internet connection and the ONLY way I will use Turbo Tax is via physical CD installation.
Intuit just lost a 25+ year customer....
H & R block is looking better and better.
CYA
@daveoman H&R Block only has download software - https://www.hrblock.com/tax-software/?srsltid=AfmBOoqOvuFOe5pQzGaCwcCJ9GofieyiiLYHzZMoNGJyIyu9zhQQ9n...
You will no longer be able to do your taxes without installing a download and having a reliable internet connection. Perhaps you can take your laptop to a location that has internet.
And do them using a unsecured wifi I don't think so
It is very clear that the management team does not care about the customer wanting the CD's. We are placing all of these posts, and they are not paying attention. Well, if we all have do the download why don't we all move to the free program that the IRS offers on their web site and save the money of buying the program.
Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free. There are 8 free software versions available from the IRS Free File site

Or—if you live in certain states you may be eligible to use the new IRS Direct File
In Filing Season 2025, Direct File will be available in Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

HR Block is an excellent company, They do not provide their software on CDs. They do have onsite tax preparers who can do your return for you and you will not need your own internet connection.
Once again NOBODY on here who is angry at Intuit is LISTENING. Intuit and EVERY OTHER company has been DOWNLOADING your software for YEARS. That CD you purchased over the past several years? Nothing more than a downloader app launcher. That's it.
Everyone complaining, "I don't have a reliable internet connection.." I ask, then how did you successfully install the last several years, because you most certainly did so. AND it was 100% DOWNLOADED.
Once again, those CDs have been made only to appease customers into a false sense of security and have been NOTHING more than downloader apps for many years.
If people refuse to use downloaded apps, you have ONLY two solutions: Pay someone to do your taxes for you, or do them manually.
For many years ALL of the companies have DOWNLOADED their software from the internet. The CD has been nothing more than a pacifier for people who want a CD. The CD has contained nothing but a downloader app for years. For years ALL of the companies have 100% downloaded their installations. And interestingly people got their software installed with no issues in the past several years.
This is where you are totally wrong. A cd is not a download it is a installation. Only the update is a download. Let's get it right next time. People let's use the IRS free tax filing and let intuit go out of business.
I have bought the CD every year for home & business from you and your other vendors going back to probably 2005 and do not like downloads. Therefore, it would be nice if you listen to the public and continue to provide the option. Too much about the bottom line these days versus serving the older public and their requests.
The differences between CD and download are:
1. You are now buying directly from Intuit with your CC instead of from a third party; therefore, they get all your updated personal transaction data from the purchase.
2. (Speculation) Going forward, Inuit can force low-level user compliance, such as updating your registration, before allowing the download.
Before now, you had the option:
1. Not to register with Intuit.
2. To file taxes on paper via US mail without using your CC to pay for electronic filing of federal return. Now, they get your CC at purchase anyway.
I’m switching to H&R Block. The whole point of TT was to self-prepare tax reporting independently and privately. Now, there’s little difference between TT and H&R Block.
