He probably needs to meet the rules for a qualifying relative.
If he was older than 19 if not a full-time student, or older than 23 and had less than $4700 of income (not counting Social Security) then you may be able to claim him as a qualifying relative, and you would get the $500 credit for other dependents for claiming him.
