Box 12a shows a code of "MAPFML" with box 12 amount of 40.88? What the heck is this and how do I enter it?

MAPFML is the abbreviation for Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave.  You enter the MAPFML on your W-2 by entering it in Box 12 Code MAPFLM and the amount of $40.88

Thanks Leonard, but my problem is that “MAPFML” is not a valid letter code for box 12a, and I have no clue what letter code to select so I can continue with my TT return?

@LeonardS Yes, but this is not a valid letter code for box 12a … is it letter code DD?

Often Box 14 contains MAPFML which would be the amount for health insurance premiums an employer would deduct from an employee paycheck.  Most of the information in the Box 12 segments are for elective deferrals.

Yes, I have that code in both boxes 12 and 14. But since there is also a dollar amount in box 12, I need to know the valid box 12 letter code that corresponds to MAPFML. Thanks!

The letters stand for Massachusetts (MA) Paid Family and Medical Leave (MAPFML). Your employer must provide the code for box 12.

A box 12 entry has two parts: a code and an amount.

  • The code is an uppercase letter or letters used to tell the IRS what the amount is for. Get more detail on box 12 codes.
  • The amount can be (1) an amount paid to you, (2) an amount paid on your behalf, or (3) an amount contributed by your employer.

Since every employer uses the same codes to talk to the IRS, we’re able to give you a list of all the possible codes. Just select the code that matches what’s on your W-2, then enter the corresponding amount.

For box 14, you should select Massachusetts Paid Family Leave since this is the letters you indicate are in that box.

@DianeW777 That’s the problem.  MAPFML is *not* in the list of valid codes you have referenced… but it *is* the code that the employer put in box 12a of the W-2.

Not sure how they pulled that off, but they did.  So now I have no valid code to enter in TurboTax.

It sounds like the employer has entered the wrong information in box 12 since they have the same amount in box 14, which is where it belongs. Only they can give you the correct information for box 12.
