Auto populated 2019 HSA contribution value shows $0 while the box 12a (code C) has $85. Why is there a mismatch?

1) I have only one W-2, and the value for Box 12a (code C) = $85.

2) My HSA account (bank) shows that I have contributed $25 in 2019 (Form 5498-SA), I didn't use any money from HSA so I don't have any 1099-SA.

3) When I am trying to add HSA information using TurboTax, I notice that it auto populates the value for 2019 HSA contributions as $0 and points to a link (Box 12a from W-2).

Question: Can someone explain the reasoning here? Is there an issue with this field in turbotax and if there is, how I can I resolve and make corrections?

(I spent an hour with a "specialized agent" and got nowhere- they closed my ticket too without a solution - hopefully someone can check this out)

You may need to verify the source of the $25. It may have been a contribution reported through payroll in late December 2018 that did not reach the HSA account until January 2019. Subsequently, it may have been reported as a contribution on your 2018 return via your W-2. If that is the case, do not report it in 2019. However, if it was a separate 2019 contribution, follow these steps:

Under the Deductions & Credits menu, confirm the following:

  • Expand the menu for Medical
  • Click Start/Revisit next to HSA, MSA Contributions
  • Confirm the account ownership and click Continue
  • Continue in through the screens until you reach Let's enter your HSA contributions
  • Stop here. Type the $25 in the box next to Any contributions you personally made

An HSA contribution from your employer is in box 12, but code W.  The $0 you are seeing is correct if you made no contributions outside of your payroll.  If you entered your W2 as it shows, and did not take any distributions, you shouldn't need to do anything else.

Thanks for your answer,

So it clarifies that I don't need to worry about box 12 (as it has code C, not W).

Although I am still wondering about why does it then show $25 as my 2019 contributions in 5498-SA form.

To be precised:

  • The turbotax page says:  "2019 employer and payroll contributions: $0
    • There is a line below it to enter amount for : "Any contributions you personally made (not through your employer)"
  • The form 5498-SA says: "Total Contributions made in 2019: $25"

Should I be putting $25 value somewhere?
