Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

Are there late penalties if we're owed a refund, and we miss the Oct. 17 deadline? What software do we use if we can no longer use Turbo Tax Online?

I'm trying to make the Oct. 17 deadline, but if I can't make it, will I have late penalties? I'm owed a refund that's maybe a few thousand for IRS and maybe about $1,000 for state.

Is it true that if we started on our Turbo Tax online for 2021, we can file by Oct. 31? Would the fee be higher on Turbo Tax?

If we can no longer file on Turbo Tax Online for 2021, what software do we use? Do we use the Turbo Tax Mac/Windows desktop version? Do we have to purchase that on Turbo Tax, Amazon, etc.? Is that close to the fee for doing Turbo Tax Online? Do we have to print out all the pages of both the federal and state returns and mail them through certified mail?

There is no penalty for filing a late return after the tax deadline if a refund is due.

TurboTax is available for e-file until October 17when the IRS closes e-file for the 2021 tax year.

Have you paid for Online yet?  If you can't finish in time you need to switch to the Desktop program. If you are getting a refund you have 3 years to file and there is no penalty.  So be sure to save your return as a .tax2021 file before online shuts down soon after Oct 15.

If you already started in the Online version you can move your return to the Desktop program even without paying for Online.  If you already paid for the Online version you can contact them to give you the program download.

First download the .tax file from the Online version,

Then see, How to Switch to Desktop,

https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/choosing-a-product/help/how-do-i-switch-from-turbotax-online-to-th...

After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return is to update the program and install any state programs you had.  So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - New)

Then you just OPEN the .tax2021 file, go up to File-Open.  You don't import or transfer it.

There are no penalties for filing a tax return after the due date of the tax return if the tax return you are filing is for a tax refund.

A 2021 tax return with a tax refund can be filed at any time on or before October 15, 2025 with a 2021 extension.

Using TurboTax you can e-file a 2021 tax return at any time on or before October 17, 2022.  After that date the 2021 tax return can only be printed and mailed using the TurboTax desktop editions, not the online editions.

You can download the 2021 tax data file to your computer and then open the data file with the 2021 desktop edition.  If you have not paid for the 2021 online edition then you will have to purchase the 2021 desktop edition to compete and file the 2021 tax return

Go to this TurboTax support FAQ for how to download the 2021 tax data file - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/import-export-data-files/save-turbotax-o...

Go to this TurboTax website to purchase the 2021 desktop editions - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/cd-download/

See below about filing late. The penalty for filing late starts out as a percentage of taxes owed for those who owed taxes. The government wants its money on time. If you owe no additional tax, you have an extra 60 days to file. But after those 60 days, the IRS will charge you $435 for filing late even though you owed no tax.

I use TurboTax Desktop, so I cannot help you with questions about TT Online

Also, if you want your refund, you must file within three years of the due date. From the IRS website: Filing Past Due Tax Returns | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)

"Claim a Refund

You risk losing your refund if you don't file your return. If you are due a refund for withholding or estimated taxes, you must file your return to claim it within 3 years of the return due date. The same rule applies to a right to claim tax credits such as the Earned Income Credit."

From the IRS website: Failure to File Penalty | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)

"The Failure to File Penalty applies if you don't file your tax return by the due date.

The penalty you must pay is a percentage of the taxes you didn't pay on time.

How You Know You Owe the Penalty

We send you a notice or letter if you owe the Failure to File Penalty. For more information, see Understanding Your IRS Notice or Letter.

How We Calculate the Penalty

We calculate the Failure to File Penalty based on how late you file your tax return and the amount of unpaid tax as of the original payment due date (not the extension due date). Unpaid tax is the total tax required to be shown on your return minus amounts paid through withholding, estimated tax payments and allowed refundable credits.

We calculate the Failure to File Penalty in this way:

  • The Failure to File Penalty is 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or part of a month that a tax return is late. The penalty won't exceed 25% of your unpaid taxes.
  • If both a Failure to File and a Failure to Pay Penalty are applied in the same month, the Failure to File Penalty is reduced by the amount of the Failure to Pay Penalty for that month, for a combined penalty of 5% for each month or part of a month that your return was late.
  • If after 5 months you still haven't paid, the Failure to File Penalty will max out, but the Failure to Pay Penalty continues until the tax is paid, up to its maximum of 25% of the unpaid tax as of the due date.
  • If your return was over 60 days late, the minimum Failure to File Penalty is $435 (for tax returns required to be filed in 2020, 2021 and 2022) or 100% of the tax required to be shown on the return, whichever is less."

IRS already has all their money.

They are getting a refund.
