Under Personal /other tax situations/...TT asks if I received a 6 digit pin from the IRS. Answered yes....But when I reach file in TT it will not accept the 6 digit pin. I also understand that if I have a 6 digit PIN I *MUST* use it. At an impass!!!!
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file. Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.
At the end, there is a 5 digit pin that is used as your signature. Here is where you enter your 6 digit IP Pin:
Here are two ways to navigate to the section to enter the 6 digit IP PIN:
Or another way:
YES...I've done all that already per the instructions but when I get to TT File the 5 digit PIN is there with no option to enter the 6 digit, ....so do I leave the TT entered 5 digit PIN or leave that box blank and TT will pick up and send the 6 digit with my E-file??
The 5 digit pin and the 6 digit pin are completely different.
The 5 digit pin is used as a signature and can be any 5 digits you want.
The 6 digit IP Pin is issued by the IRS.
The five digit PIN is for next year and required, even though TurboTax does not support it !
The IP PIN can be used instead of AGI to e-File.
In process of e-filing, TurboTax asks for 5 digit "signature" PIN. The IRS rejected my efile for lack of correct PIN?
I tried to confirm PIN on IRS.com but was instead lead to get an 6 digit IP PIN. Very confusing because I did not realize there were two different pins. When I returned to TurboTax I was shown the screen with the 5 digit pins so could not make correction there. Had to read community discussions to try to resolve but TurboTax should have lead me to IP PIN entry instead of signature PIN site.
Can't believe I was the only one confused.

I'm suspicious of your first rejection since you did not provide the rejection error code, so all we can do is guess for now. I'm curious if the original rejection code might have been for an AGI/PIN issue, which is not an IP PIN (Identity Protection PIN) issue. In the rejection message did it specifically mention the term "IP PIN" or "Identity Protection PIN?" Or did it say there was a problem with AGI or PIN? If the latter, that is not Identity Pin. Again, it's hard to know without the rejection error code.
In any case, if you acquired a 6-digit IP PIN, then you do have to use it. From the above I can't tell if you entered it or not, but if you haven't, here's how:
Federal tab (or the PERSONAL tab in Home and Business desktop)
Subtab Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
Expand that topic and choose Identity Protection PIN.
You will still need to enter a 5-digit PIN on the Signature page to "sign" your return. It's on a page with today's date and your birth date. Like it says there, those 5 digits can be any 5 digits of your choosing (except can't be all zeros.)
If you get another rejection, be sure to post the actual rejection error code.

I don't know what "IRS.com" is. The official IRS website is IRS.gov .
In any case, see the long answer I left you above about your rejection error issue. Without knowing the original rejection error code, I'd be suspicious you may have ended up with an IP PIN by mistake, but now you do have to use it.
Sorry, my email responses apparently don't reach you.
Both efile attempts were rejected for lack of IP PIN, code IND-181-01. If I had an IP PIN before those two attempts I was not aware of it.
Of course I meant irs.gov and that was how I got my IP PIN that I was finally able to enter on TurboTax. I also entered the first 5 digits as my signature PIN (not that it makes any difference). With the IP PIN entered my third efile attempt was actually accepted.
As an aside, I have been using TurboTax for many years and have never had so much trouble as I have had this year (2024) with the PIN confusion and with the RMD reporting (where I took distribution from one IRA to cover RMD for another IRA).
Maybe I am getting too old for filing my own taxes but hopefully TurboTax will "correct" those two situations next year.
Thanks for your attention and responses.
Gerr
You're welcome. I'm glad you finally got your efile accepted.
Yes, IND-181-01 is a pure "missing IP PIN" type rejection.
You said: "Sorry, my email responses apparently don't reach you."
That's correct. This is mainly a user community forum that works like a bulletin board. It doesn't use any incoming email. So if you tried to send a message back from a forum notification email, no telling where it went.
I don't know how the IRS came to expect an IP PIN from you, but we see that happen from time to time. However, now that you are in the IP PIN program, they will expect you to get and use a new one every year. Some people who voluntarily got one can "opt out" of the program in future years (if they see that option in their IRS account.) But it's a good idea to stay in the IP PIN program. It's good protection to use every year to help keep someone from using your identity to file a return.
