When I enter the information from the 1099 MISC that I received from the UAW I am receiving errors and it takes me to a schedule C which I did not receive or have information. Turbo Tax will not let me proceed to file my federal return and list numerous errors for schedule C. Please Help.

Delete the 1099-misc you entered and re-enter it as follows:

Click Federal

Click Wages & Income

Click “See All Income” if needed

Scroll down (PAST SELF-EMPLOYMENT) to “Other Common Income”

Click “Show more”

Scroll down to “Form 1099-MISC”

Click Start

Enter the 1099-MISC and Continue

On the “Describe the reason for this 1099-MISC” screen enter something like “UAW strike pay” and Continue

Select “None of these apply” and Continue

Select “No, it didn’t involve work like main job” and continue through the interview selecting the appropriate answers for this strike pay

The amount from the 1099-MISC will be reported as Other income on the 1040 line 7a, not as Self-employment

You will want to delete the Schedule C- follow these steps: Solved: How do i delete a schedule c form.  Because you are getting the errors, I would suggest deleting the Schedule C AND the 1099-MISC, then use the prior steps to re-enter.  Let me know if this works for you!

Did the UAW strike pay involve an intent to earn money? Yes or No?

No, the UAW strike pay did not even cover the loss wages.  These questions determine if you need to pay self-employment tax on the income- which you should not.

UAW strike pay should not be reported as self-employment income.  Delete the 1099-Misc that you entered.

To correctly report the 1099-Misc income, scroll down to Other Common Income to report the 1099-Misc.

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  • Along the top of the screen, click on Income & expenses.
  • Under Your Income and expenses, click Edit/Add to the right of Other common income.
  • Click Start / Revisit to the right of Form 1099-Misc.
  • Under Describe the reason put UAW strike pay.

Please see the screen shot at the bottom. When answed as directed, the 1099-Misc will be entered on Other Income, Line 8

  • Did the uaw involve work that's like Coleen's main job? NO
  • How often did Coleen get income for uaw? 2019 (If you get this in multiple years, this would trigger Schedule C as if it not a one-off)
  • Did the uaw involve an intent to earn money? NO
  •

@ColeenD3 I followed your instructions and still files a Schedule C and says I have 17 issues that need resolving.

This is getting aggravating. Why is it so hard to find a contact number to call someone?

You definitely should not have this  income subject to self-employment tax.

There is an alternative way of reporting other income you may want to try.

To enter in TurboTax, follow these steps:

  1. From the left menu, select Federal
  2. Wages & Income scroll all the way down to Less Common Income and click Show More
  3. Select the last listed option for Miscellaneous Income 1099-A, 1099-C, click Start
  4. Next, select the last listed option Other Reportable Income
  5. Did you receive any other taxable income, click yes
  6. Other Taxable Income: Enter your description and the amount and click Continue and Done. Disregard the comment "Do not enter income from Form 1099-MISC here" because this is meant to guide taxpayers reporting typical 1099-MISC income. Your case is less common and this is how you can report it in TurboTax.

Secondly, you asked how to contact TurboTax. Click the link for your call-in options.
