As long as you have not mailed your state return in, you can do the following:
This will allow you to see your state return. (You do not need to actually add a state, but this will allow you to access your existing state return.)
You will then be able to try to complete and electronically file your state return.
Hi Jotika,
How would we do this with the downloaded software? Particularly on a mac.
@apoursh Using the desktop version of TurboTax, you can go to the Forms mode to access your state return. You can access the Forms Mode by choosing the Forms option in the upper left corner of your screen, or use the View option on your menu screen and then Go to Forms.
Thanks Jotika,
is this only for people who are filling the forms out online, or also for those who are filing out with the CD download?
Not sure where you mean when you say to "sign into TurboTax"
In my case, my federal is already filed electronically, and my NYS is stuck and no idea what to do
In what way is it stuck? Is it pending or rejected? We don't have access to your return in this public forum. Please clarify.
Sign into TurboTax is an online instruction. For CD download the instruction is open your return.
ok thanks. So I like the others it seems, e-filed the federal. Now when I go to e-file NYS, it won't transmit - says "cancelled" and "ran into hiccup"
The other Tax Expert I was replying to said, to download NYS again "(You do not need to actually add a state, but this will allow you to access your existing state return.)" - BUT, actually it says that it is already installed and I do not need to download the state and in fact won't even let me re-download as it's already installed.
Basically not sure what to do here and today's the deadline - is there a workaround to e-file NYS, or what is the solution to the "cancelled" transmission? Or can you link to instructions to mail it in to NYS, if I need to try to leave work and snail mail it?
thanks
These instructions should assist you: How do I switch from "E-File" to "File by Mail" in...
You may get a "nasty note" saying that New York requires e-filing. But when there is an issue that prevents e-filing, they will accept a paper-filed return. It just takes longer.
Unfortunately, it's still an issue two years later!
Where do I mail my State taxes to

If you are not e-filing the state tax return then the mailing address will be on the Filing Instructions page when you print your state tax return.
Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Then click on Print Center. Then click on Print, save or preview this year's return. Choose the option Include government and TurboTax worksheets
I am in a similar situation. I first e-filed my federal tax with Turbo Tax, without e-filing my State tax. I am now trying to e-file my New York Tax. However it still says that I should also either e-file my Federal return now or e-File my Federal tax later. When I select the former it (correctly) says that this would be a duplicate of a past e-filing, and when I select e-filing the Federal later and the New York Tax now, it says that this is not possible as the Federal Tax need to be filed first before the State Tax. catch 22. How can i make Turbo Tax understand that the Federal Tax have already been e-filed?
Thank you Carrissa, however it does not work. Even though[email address removed] sent me an email to say that "Your federal tax return was accepted by the IRS." the software itself keeps on saying that I can only file the state tax after the federal tax return has been filed. It is as though the (desktop) software did not recognize that i have filed the federal tax already. And therefore it says that I can only file the State Tax after i filed the Federal Tax. What is inconsistent though is that if I try to file again the Federal tax , the software (correctly) says that this is a duplicate of a federal tax return I have already filed. And (correctly) prevents me from e-filing it a second time. So the software is both recognizing that I filed the federal tax and denying it when it comes to filing State Tax only. Help Please !

Yes, Turbo tax doesn't seem to recognize that even though under filing status it says accepted
