The first time that you e-filed a tax return, you had the opportunity to select a five digit pin number. If you remember that pin number, you can use it for the rest of your life to verify your identity. If you don’t remember that pin number, you have to use your adjusted gross income (AGI) from last year. If you filed using TurboTax last year, and you use the same account online, the program will automatically carryover last year‘s AGI to use for this year’s e-file. If you did not use TurboTax in 2018, or if you used a different account online in TurboTax, you need to type in your 2018 AGI from a copy of your tax return. It is on line 7.
If you don’t have a copy of your 2018 tax return, you can get a transcript from the IRS. If you filed late in the season, your AGI might not be in the system and you can try zero. If you can’t find a pin number or AGI that works, you will have to print your return and file by mail.

You are being asked for your 2018 AGI so that you can e-file your 2019 return. That is how the IRS matches you up with the same person who used the SSN last year for a 2019 return.

Your 2018 tax return shows your 2018 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) If you filed a joint return then the AGI is the same for each of you.
