Hello,
I tried to e-file an amended 2021 tax return (before October 17) but there was some software error and despite all the attempts with tech support, I was told I would need to mail in the return. Can I sign with (Mac's) Preview > Annotate > Signature instead of with a pen? It seems from this article that the IRS is now accepting digitized signatures for some forms, but not for a 1040X. Can someone recommend a digital-signature method?
I see something with getting a PIN but it seems to be for tax preparers, and complicated. My taxes are self-prepared with TurboTax.
Thanks!

It is too late for you to e-file an amended 2021 return. The return has to be filed by mail, so there is no reason to stress over digitized signatures, etc. Use a pen, sign and date it and mail it in.
Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return. During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six to nine months or more for many amended returns. Do not expect quick results from amending. When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check. They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns. You can watch for information here:

Why can't you sign in ink with a pen? Seems easier. And when you mail it get a tracking number from the post office.
Just get a BLUE ink pen and simply ink sign the copy you will mail in ... no need to chance having the form mailed back to you in 6 months time for a missing ink signature which will delay the usual 6-10 month processing time by another 6 months.
I know it is late. But October 17 was not late and the TurboTax people could not fix the problem, so the only solution was to mail it in.
@VolvoGirl Because I am out of the country and I wanted to get done with this asap 🙂
@lameri You cannot e-file now. The only way to file a 2021 return is by mail. A digitized signature would not speed anything up for you. You still have to print, sign and date the return and send it to the IRS in an envelope.
@xmasbaby0 Like I said, I know it is late. But October 17 was not late and the TurboTax people could not fix the problem, so the only solution was to mail it in. My tax return will be mailed out for sure, but I would want to print the signature I have already in my computer, not needing a pen. That is my question.
Print out the signature page again, take out a pen, and sign that page in ink next to the words "Sign here". Give up on the digitized signature or you risk getting that Form 1040 back from the IRS someday with a request from the IRS to sign it in ink. That will delay processing for many extra months.
