The control number in box d is not required by the IRS - it is used by your employer.  As a result, if it causing you trouble, just delete it.  If it is not causing you trouble, then leave it in - it won't matter.

This thread is talking about Box d (d) on a W-2 which might report a control number. 

A control number is not needed by tax Software, and not needed by the IRS. 

If you mean EIN Number, that is in Box B (b) which is located on the W-2 ABOVE the name of the employer.

Turbo tax will not let you proceed without a control number even if you don’t have one to input . WTH?

If you are asking about Box D of your Form W-2, that is a control number and you generally do not have to enter one. Some employers do not have one. Make sure (especially if you imported your Form W-2) that there are no blank spaces in the box. You can also try using a place-holder number like 12345 or 12345 67890.

If you imported your W-2 you may need to delete it and re-enter it. You can do this as follows:

If you used TurboTax Online you can:

1. Click on "Tax Tools" in the left panel of your TurboTax screen
2. Select  "Tools"
3. Click on "Delete a Form"
4. Scroll down the list of your forms to find Form W-2
5. Click on the trash can to the right of your form to delete it

If you used TurboTax Desktop, you can:

1. Click on "Forms" in the top right of your TurboTax screen to switch to "Forms Mode"
2. In your left panel of your TurboTax screen find Form W-2
3. Click on "Delete Form" at the bottom of the form
4. Click on "Yes" to confirm the deletion

To get back to the screens where you can re-enter your Form W-2 you can:

1. Click on "Search" in the top right of your TurboTax screen.
2. Type "W-2" in the search bar.
3. Click on the link "Jump to W-2"
