If I owe taxes but never recieved my second stimulus and claimed it, should it have shown up as part of my federal return?

Do you mean current (2020) taxes, or back taxes?

Probably. There is a section in TurboTax asking about stimulus payments called “It looks like you qualified for the stimulus, did you get any payments?" If you say Yes, it will ask you to confirm or change the amounts received.

TurboTax will not show you this screen if you do not qualify, based on the information you entered.

To check your stimulus in TurboTax:

  • Type stimulus in Search in the upper right
  • Click jump to stimulus

Generally, if you were a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident alien in 2020, were not a dependent of another taxpayer and have a Social Security number that is valid for employment, you are eligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit.  Your credit amount will be reduced if your adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than:

  • $150,000 if married and filing a joint return or filing as a qualifying widow or widower
  • $112,500 if filing as head of household or
  • $75,000 for eligible individuals filing as a single or as married filing separately.
