If your state, and the state you work in do not have an income tax, there should be no entry in boxes 15-20. If either or both of them do have income tax, that information should be entered. Box 15 is the 2-letter abbreviation for your state.
Several states do not have a state income tax. So these states will not show up in certain drop down lists. Leave boxes 15, 16, and 17 blank when you enter a W-2 for these states.
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming
I work and live in a state with no income tax. The W2 box 15 has the state but no employer state ID and box 16 is filled out. The W2 preparer states the W2 is correct but turbotax won't continue without the employer state ID. If I don't input the Box 15 and 16 info, it won't match the W2. How is this to be handled?
As answered above, leave all boxes 15, 16, 17 Blank, no spaces.
W2 is blank and blank in TurboTax desktop. Smart Check says 'state must be entered".
