To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Start the 2024 online tax return by entering some personal information then click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.

On the Tax Home webpage -

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

For a fee of $30 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

I need my 2023 tax file so I can use it to import it's data on 2024 return?

I am having the same issue, which is creating a problem - for example, the program can't see if I itemized or took standard deduction in 2023 in order to complete simple tasks.  I am routed through many questions that would not normally be asked if program recognized the prior year's tax return.  I can't see the normal comparison between tax years.  It is very frustrating.

To be able to better assist you, can you provide a little bit more information for me?

- Are you using the TurboTax Online or TurboTax Desktop program for 2024?

- Did you use the same format in 2023?

- If using TurboTax Online, are you logged in to the same account that you log in to last year? To confirm this, you can log in with your email address instead of a username. You will see a list of usernames linked to the account and the last time they were used.

I am using TurboTax Desktop program for 2024, I am using the same format. I found a copy of my return from last year but it says it can't open the file when I try to import it. Is there any where  I can download it from?

Are you on Windows or Mac?  What file are you trying to transfer?  You need to have last year’s file ending in .tax2023 to transfer on your computer.

Here's an idea.  Do you still have 2023 installed?  Try opening 2023 program and see if you can get your 2023 return to show up in it.  Go to FILE - OPEN.   Then save it again with a name and place you can find.  Go to File - Save As.  Then start a new 2024 return and transfer from the 2023 file.

I need my 2023 tax file so I can use it to import it's data on 2024 return?

I have followed the instructions to import the data. I am on a MAC desktop. Using the same version of Turbo Tax Deluxe.
When I go to check the deductions for 2023 it is greyed out.

My 2023 tax file will not import it's data on 2024 return other than my name and address.
Help.

If you access the Tax Summary from the left side list of forms, instead of from the top menu bar allows you to view the Federal Tax Summary correctly.

I have been using TurboTax for over a decade.  I don't ever remember this being a problem before.  The software usually imports last year's return for you, so that comparisons can be made.

Any reason why it's not doing this for 2024?

Are you using the TurboTax online web-based editions or the TurboTax desktop editions installed on your computer?

If the online editions, did you also use the online editions for tax year 2023 and then sign onto the 2024 account with the same User ID that was used to create the 2023 account?

If the desktop editions, did you also use the desktop editions for tax year 2023?  If so, is the saved 2023 tax data file, which has a file extension of .tax2023, in the TurboTax folder within your Documents directory?

Thanks for your reply.

I'm using the 2024 version that I downloaded off the TurboTax website onto my desktop.

My 2023 data was prepared using a disc I purchased at Target, and loaded onto my desktop.

The file for last year's taxes has to be on the computer in a location where the software can find it.  You need to locate the file for last year's taxes using the search function on your computer search for .tax2023 and then when you locate the file you can either make note of the location so that you can lead the 2024 software to find it or you can move it somewhere that it is easy to locate, like your desktop.  But if the software can't find the file it can't load it.
