Do you have a TurboTax Online account?

We'll help you get started or pick up where you left off.

I mistakenly paid my federal payment with my credit card and incurred a $240 fee. I want to rescind that payment and pay through my bank account. I have not filed yet.

If you haven't paid your Federal taxes owed on another site by credit card or since you have not filed your return yet, you can go back through the File section, go all the way through the screens until you get to the screen that asks how you want to pay your Federal taxes, there you can change your option.  If you already paid the Federal taxes owed, you cannot change your payment method.

If you cannot get back into your return, see the following

  1. In TurboTax Online, sign into your account.
  2. Select Tax Home in the left menu.
  3. Scroll down to Your tax returns & documents.
  4. Select 2019, and then select Add a State (you're not actually adding a state, this just opens the return back up)
  5. Make changes and then refile

To understand this----you already paid your federal tax due but wish you had not used a credit card on the IRS site---and now you want to have the IRS refund that payment so you can pay by a different method?  Ummm...not sure if you can do that with the IRS.

If you scheduled the payment for some future date--maybe....

TO CANCEL A TAX PAYMENT YOU SCHEDULED

If your return was accepted, you cannot change your payment method  or payment date.  The only thing you can do is cancel the payment and then pay by a different method on your own.

  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to ask about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.
