I’m trying to figure out why military has to pay a $40 processing fee

My husband and I are filing our state taxes and we are currently stationed in Texas. His home of record is Michigan so we’re filing the Michigan state taxes after filing everything. It’s now asking us to pay $70 plus an additional $40 processing fee for not paying upfront. I’m trying to figure out where all these fees are coming from given the fact that we are military and I’m a veteran…

In the My Info section of the program you need to indicate that you are active military.  You must enter a Military W-2 in the Wages & Income section and after completing the W-2 on the screen labeled Let's check for uncommon situations you will need to check the box Active military duty

When you complete the tax return using the above information you will not be charged for either the federal or state tax returns. (Assuming you have indicated you are enlisted personnel)

Incorrect the last two years it has not been automatically registered at the end but the prior years has been.

Just completed a 2024 test online tax return indicating I was active military.

Entered the information on the tax return as previously posted.  In the File section of the program on Step 1 it shows $0 For TurboTax and $0 for state.
