Generally a 1099-MISC with income reported in box 3 or 7 is considered self-employment income as far as the IRS is concerned. But there are rare exceptions. What box is the money reported in, and why were you paid that money?

You simply need to enter your 1099-MISC as the information is shown on the form, including info in box 6 of the form.

To do this in TurboTax Online you can follow these steps:

  1. Open or continue your return
  2. Select the magnifying glass and search for 1099-misc. Select the Jump-to link
  3. Answer Yes to Did you get a 1099-MISC?
    • If you already entered a 1099-MISC, you'll be on the 1099-MISC Summary screen, in which case you'll select Add Another 1099-MISC
    • If you need to edit or delete a previously entered 1099-MISC, select the appropriate button
  4. Enter the info from your form into the corresponding boxes
    • If you need to enter boxes 4–6 or 8–17, check My form has other info in boxes 1–17 to expand the form

Since it's not earned income, enter it as below.

Reporting 1099-MISC (box 3 or box 7) that is not self-employment income

Under the Wages & Income tab (or Personal Income tab) scroll down to Other Common Income and elect to start/update Income from form 1099-MISC. Then click YES to indicate you have a 1099-MISC.

Enter the 1099-MISC exactly as printed, and then Continue.

Enter the reason you got this money – be it scholarship, bonus, streaking butt naked across the 50 yard line of the super bowl, whatever. Then continue.

Select None of these apply, then Continue.

Select No, it didn’t involve work….. and Continue.

Select ONLY the tax year for which this specific 1099-MISC was issued. Do not select the year that you received the 1099. Select the year for which the 1099-MISC was issued. Select no other year. Then Continue.

Select No, it didn’t involve an intent to earn money, then Continue.

Select NO, then Continue.

Click the DONE button, and that does it.

this is what I did and no schedule c was produced but I am still being asked to pay for Self employed version.  I don't want to clear my whole return if it will just happen again.

I got royalties from oil rights in my 1099-MISC , it had my payment on (Line 2: Royalties) I put it in (Line 7: Nonemployee compensation)

It bypassed all the self-employment crap and I was able to choose oil rights as the reason why I was compensated.

No extra turbo tax fees either.

I have deleted other income and started over adding a 1099 Misc.  I am a college intern for a company and they sent me the 1099 Misc.  I'm not self employed nor do I have a tax code to complete the schedule C that it keeps taking me to.  Also, how do you access directly to the forms and input the amount on the correct line without having to go through the interview questions?  How is this reported?

Here are the steps to enter your 1099-MISC:

  1. Sign into TurboTax.
  2. Pick up where I left off.
  3. Wages & Income > Other Common Income > Form 1099-MISC > Start / Revisit.

   4.   On the screen, "Did you get a 1099-MISC?" answer "Yes."

   5.  Enter the 1099-MISC.

  6.  Continue > Done.
