The IP Pin is different than the 5-digit signature Pin. Additionally, the IP Pin will change each and every year. This is an Identity Protection Pin.
You can get an Identity Protection pin here, or if you lost your IP PIN, you can go here to Retrieve IP PIN.
If you have a 6 digit PIN issued to you by the IRS you need to enter it in order to e-file. Go to Federal>Other Tax Situations>Other Return Info>Identity Protection PIN and enter the six-digit PIN.
You have to enter an IP PIN every year. But you cannot use the IP PIN that you used in 2023 on a tax return that you file in 2024. The IRS will give you a new IP PIN for any tax returns that you file in 2024. Note that what matters is the year that you file, not the year that the tax return is for.
The 6-digit IP PIN changes every year. It's my understanding the IRS will mail you a new PIN sometime in January each tax year through the U.S. Postal Service.
