If you are no longer working and did not receive a W-2, that is fine.  Just skip W-2's.  If you have a SSA1099 for Social Security or a 1099R for retirement income, go to Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social Security

Turbo Tax Deluxe said the program would walk me through this stuff. What's going on with the idea that I have to find some special page or section?

The W-2s from a prior year or if you accidentally indicated  you had one can be deleted by following the steps below.

You'll need to delete this form .

  • If you're using TurboTax Online software and need to delete a form, click here.
  • If you're using TurboTax CD\Download software and need to delete a form, click here

To report your 1099-R or your SSA-1099 you can use the steps below.

1099-R:

You'll have the option in TurboTax to import or upload your 1099-R or manually enter the information yourself.

Here's where to enter your 1099-R in TurboTax:

  1. Open or continue your return.
  2. In the Federal section, select Wages & Income.
  3. Scroll to locate Retirement Plans and Social Security.
  4. Select Start or Revisit next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R).

You can also find the 1099-R section using Search. Open your return, enter 1099-r in the search bar, and select the Jump to 1099-r link.

SSA-1099:

Forms SSA-1099, SSA-1099-SM, and SSA-1099-R-OP1 report retirement, disability, and survivor benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Don't confuse the SSA-1099 with the 1099-R that reports retirement benefits from non-SSA sources like pensions, 401(k)s, and IRAs. 1099-Rs are entered elsewhere in TurboTax.

All SSA-1099 forms get entered in the same place:

  1. Open (continue) your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the search bar, search for the term Social Security benefits and then select the Jump to link at the top of your search results.
  3. On the screen Did you receive Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits in 20XX? answer Yes and select Continue.
  4. On the next screen, check the box beside Social Security benefits (Form SSA-1099), then enter the amounts from your form(s) in the boxes provided.
    • If you received multiple SSA-1099s, add up the amounts for each box and enter them together.
    • Don't include SSA-1099s for dependents. Those should be reported on the dependent's return, but only if they are required to file a return (this is uncommon).
  5. Select Continue and follow the on-screen instructions.

We'll calculate how much, if any, of your Social Security benefits are taxable. If your only income is from Social Security, you aren't required to file a return.

Please update here if you need additional information or have more questions.

I hope the rest of the 'walking me through' this maze doesn't require as much hunting as this part.  For a guided process, it would be nicer if the guide was with the customer.

In TurboTax Online, there are guides and shortcuts for the user. For example, you can click on the question mark that appears near the top right of your screen and type in what you are looking for, such as "social security", and TurboTax will provide you a link to jump to that section if you'd rather not search the income topic list.

Also, you are invited to click on any "Learn More" links that appear in the program as they explain the reasons behind the entries.

Each income topic entry screen is customized for that income item to help ensure accuracy.

You can also use this tax preparation checklist and this planning tips article to help you with the process.
