@dwingsman  - A taxpayer can file jointly with a deceased spouse in the year of death.   If the taxpayer has a dependent child then the taxpayer can file as "widow(er with dependent child" for the 2 years following the year of death (unless remarried).   After that the filing status would be single or Head of Household if qualified.

You cannot file Head of Household without a qualifying relative that you can claim as a dependent.

Your choice is either single or Married filing Jointly if you spouse passed in 2016.

Your filing status for tax year 2021 should be Single if you have not remarried.

If you are not married and do not have any dependents then you file the 2021 tax return as Single.
