You will have to amend your return to remove one of the children. GF will not be able to e-file this year since you already put the child's SSN into the system. GF can file a return claiming her child but now she has to file by mail. She does not need to wait for you to amend, since amended returns take months to process. You need to wait until the IRS processes your return in order to amend. The Form 1040X you need will become available in late February. You might have to re-pay some child-related credits you received.
Her mailed return will also take a lot longer to process so she should use a mailing service that will track it in order for her to know the IRS received it.
When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
She will have to mail in her return this year to claim one or both of them. You will have to amend your return to take off the dependent. I don't understand about her now owing the IRS. Did she take off the dependent so she could efile?
Even if you amend she will have to mail her return so she doesn't have to wait for you to fix yours. Has your 2022 original return been Accepted? You need to wait for it to fully process and you get the first refund. Then you can Amend. So it might be a long wait. The amended return won't be ready until Feb 23.
