he is a dependent, and should he report the tax? how to report it? can we do it in turbotax with our tax?
thanks

MY DEPENDENT HAD A JOB
If your dependent has a W-2 for his after-school job, summer job, etc. you do not include the information on your own return. You can still claim your child as a dependent on your own return. He/she can file his own return for a refund of some of his withheld wages (he won’t get back anything for Social Security or Medicare), but MUST indicate on it that he can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return. (Supervise this closely or prepare it for him!)
If your dependent’s earnings were over $400 and were reported on a 1099Misc or 1099NEC then he must file a return and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare.
You might also want to use free software from the IRS Free File versions:
https://apps.irs.gov/app/freeFile/
just wan to make sure I understand.
so, we can NOT include my son's w2 in our tax, and HAVE TO file for himself?
is this correct?
Thanks
also, does my son need to report FED & STATE tax? for example, maybe get another copy of turbo tax?
if we have to do it like this, we want to do it.
Thanks
@urlreader That is correct.

If you are using the TurboTax desktop CD/Download editions installed on a computer, to start another tax return click on the File menu at the top left of the desktop program screen. Click on New Tax Return.
As previously stated - He only needs to file a tax return to get a refund of any federal and/or state income taxes withheld from his wages.
if there is no withhold, does it mean he does NOT have to file tax return? and just claim as dependent?
there is no withhold in this case.
thanks, appreciate the help.

If there were no taxes withheld he does not need to file a tax return. You can claim him as a dependent on your tax return as you normally would.
Right, He doesn't have to file if he only has W2 income under 12,950 but can file to get back any withholding taken out in boxes 2 or 17.
just found, the W2 has withhold in box2 and 6 (medicare). However, the total is only $30.
if, we do not want the refund, does it mean we do not need to file the tax for him? and will not cause any trouble in the future?
or, had better file anyway.
thanks

No, you do not have to file a tax return for him even if there are taxes withheld in box 2 of the W-2. He is not Required to file a federal tax return if his only income is from wages and is less than $12,950.
Have him file for the box 2 amount. It will be a good learning experience about taxes. He can use the Free Edition or I would have him fill out the 1040 by hand to learn.

good idea. not about money, good experience for him!
thanks!
