How to change filing status from single to head of household?

Are you claiming a qualified dependent?

Am I Head of Household?

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

Did you enter a qualifying person as a dependent on your tax return?

How to change filing status from single to head of household?

Yes, I did that and listed my qualified dependent, and TT still gives me a filing status of Single.  There's no way to change it to HoH.  Seeking help on that.

Yes.  Listed a qualified dependent and still have no option for HoH or to make a manual change.  Seeking help on that.

You can try the following to change your filing status:

  1. Click on your search icon in your upper right corner of your TurboTax screen
  2. Type "filing status" in your search box
  3. Click on the link "Jump to filing status"
  4. And you should see a screen "Review Your Filing Status"
  5. Click "Change my filing status"
  6. And a drop down appears.

To qualify for head of household, you have to meet the following:

  • You must pay for more than half of the expenses for a qualifying household
  • You must be considered unmarried on the last day of the tax year
  • You must have a qualifying child or dependent

Head of Household status includes single parents. It also includes divorced or legally separated parents with custody of a child.

You can also be an adult who provides support for a parent or other relative under qualifying circumstances.

Your screens will look something like this:

How to change filing status from single to head of household?

I have the same issue as the user above. I’ve filed as Head of Household since I was divorced a few years ago. I’ve entered my status as “divorced and not remarried”, confirmed that I have dependents, and it’s automatically changing my status to single and saying it’s because I didn’t provide more than 50% of support which isn’t accurate. Hopefully someone can help me fix this before I move on to another filing service. I’ve used TurboTax for almost 20 years now.

@smb4ua If you have entered qualified dependents then it should be offering you HOH filing status. So....either your dependents are not "qualified" dependents or you have entered something about them incorrectly.   (A GF or BF or the children of a BF or GF are not qualified dependents for HOH filing status, for instance.)

Try deleting the dependent and re-entering them in MY INFO to see if that helps.
