How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

@nancyus   AND PLUS line 38.

If you have a tax due or even a refund you can owe a penalty for not paying in enough during the year.

You might be able to eliminate it or at least reduce it. You can go to Federal Taxes tab or Personal tab, under Other Tax Situations and select Start by the Underpayment Penalties. You will answer a series of questions that may reduce or eliminate the penalty. Or you can elect to have the IRS figure the penalty for you. It's form 2210.

It's under

Federal or Personal (for Home & Business Desktop)

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

The Tax Due on 1040 line 37 is line 24 Tax minus 33 Payments PLUS line 38 Penalty. See IRS instructions page 62 line 38
https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf

It says…. Enter any penalty on line 38. Add the penalty to any tax due and enter the total on line 37.

Turbo tax error:

when calculate tax owe line 37: line 24  minus line 33

($146,110)-($112,691) = $33,419

but on  turbo, line 37 is $33,747

This is simple calculation, why this bug happens?

Do you have a schedule H or schedule E?

Do you have a Schedule 3 with an amount on line 12e?

If so, then see the 1040 schedule 3 line 12e instructions because the tax can be different peer IRS instructions.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

I have found an error in turbo tax online while completing the (free file) for a deceased family member.  I can't seem to be able to complete the tax form without it forcing me to take 1800 in economic recovery stimulus for a family member who died in April 2020 before the tax stimulus payments were approved. I did receive the first stimulus check for my deceased father, but I mailed it back to the appropriate branch of the IRS. Your software seems to be missing a link to the effective date of death.  My father could not possibly be eligible for payments beyond the date of death.  I believe this situation is serious as there was a high amount of deaths this year which will affect anyone using your software to complete their taxes.  Thank You.

Yes they get it.   For deceased individuals see the second question under Eligibility. If they died in 2020 they still get it.

TurboTax Home and Business 2020 for Mac will not print.  It just locks up and I have to force quit.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

I had an IRA distribution that was split between a cash payout, charitable contributions and a Roth conversion.  TurboTax gives me an error report that the amount of Roth conversion that I claim cannot be higher than line B1 of the 1099-R form.  Line B1 is the amount of a traditional IRA or pension that is rolled over to another traditional IRA or pension, which for me is zero.  This should have no bearing on the amount converted to a Roth

Turbo Tax instructs me to enter the Roth conversion on lines B4 or B5, which I did.  Turbo Tax gives me an “allowable” amount for a Roth conversion that is lower than my actual, but also higher than line B1.  So even the Turbo Tax amount should give me an error message.  This is why I believe that there is a software problem.

Try just waiting for the state to print - a half hour or more.

TurboTax does not do printing, it just calls the built in Apple print function that should bring up the standard Apple print dialog box, but on some Mac's that print call message form TurboTax to the Apple OS gets blocked by some other process? that is running on the Mac. Just waiting seems to work in many cases and after the first print, then subsequent print seem to be normal.

At least one Mac user traced it to old virus software that they had installed years ago and then removed but they located a couple of hidden files that the virus software installed that the virus uninstaller did not remove. Once they deleted those files, print functioned normally.

Why it only seems to affect state printing, I do not know.

Here is a long thread on this issue:

Delete the 1099-R and re-enter.   After the RMD question it should ask if there was a QCD - enter that, then say you "moved" the  money and did a combination of things - enter the amount converted.

Note: if you do not get the RMD and QCD question then:

2020 TurboTax presently has a bug the prevents it from asking the necessary question for those with birthdates between July 1, 1949 and June 30, 1950. As a workaround for this, with the CD/download version you can provide the QCD-amount information on the 1099-R in forms mode or in any version of TurboTax you can temporarily change your birthdate in TurboTax to something before July 1, 1949, edit the 1099-R form in TurboTax and answer the question asking how much was transferred to charity, then change your birthdate in TurboTax back to your actual birthdate.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

On line 9 of this form it says to multiply $600 by the number of qualifying children under age 17 listed in the Dependents section of page 1 of form 1040. I don't have any child dependents. I'm retired claiming only me and my wife as dependents.

The program calculates that I have 4 children and puts the value of $2400 on line 9 of this worksheet. The value should be 0.

In the Federal review section, where it asks how much I received in stimulus checks, it says that I should have received $2400 and $3600. When I change the numbers to $2400 and $1200 (the correct amounts that I received) the program gives me a $2400 credit which I believe is in error.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

I believe there may be a tax calculation error in Turbo Tax.   Turbo Tax Premier (CD version, with latest updates in place) says your taxable income is $34,042 and it calculated Federal tax owed of $2898.  Filing status is Married filing jointly.  According to the 2020 IRS tax tables the Tax owed should be $3688.  I don't mind a lower amount if it is correct, but it just doesn't appear to be correct.

Please review and advise.  Thank you.

Look at your tax return Form 1040 on Line 16.  Is there an indication on the left of Line 16 showing the taxes were calculated on some other worksheet or form?

Did you report any Qualified Dividends or Capital Gains on the federal return?  If so, the tax tables would no be used.  The Qualified Dividends and Capital Gains Worksheet would be used which would normally result in a lower tax on the taxable income.

How do I report TurboTax Software Errors?

I have exactly the same problem when using TurboTax Premier downloaded PC version. I was forced to try using TurboTax Premier online version and it calculated line 37 correctly. Contents on Line 33 and 24 (along with all other input data) are the same in both versions. Yet the resulting Line 37 are different. Again, TurboTax Premier downloaded version calculated Form 1040 Line 37 incorrectly while the online version did it correctly. Please result this issue so that I can switch back to using the downloaded version. Thank you.

Thanks for your reply! I have the same problem as reported by @nancyus. I don't have Schedule H nor Schedule 3. I do have Schedule E. However, it is for the depreciation of my business property. I can't find the connection to Schedule E with the Form 1040 Line 37 problem.
