How do I make the TurboTax program recognize that as a military member, I am an Ohio resident with a mailing address outside of the state?

I have already validated that both state residency and "My Info" are correct. This is the first time, filing my 2019 taxes that it incorrectly indicates I'm not an Ohio resident based on my out-of-state mailing address.

When you say "validated" do you mean you made sure you have Ohio selected?

Also did you make sure that you selected that you are an active military member?

By "Validated" I mean that I went back and made certain my state and federal information showed that I am a U.S. Armed Forces member and that Ohio is reflected as my state. I have checked it multiple times to ensure the data I entered is accurate.  Thank you for any info or guidance you might have!

Thank you.

Did you enter dates on the Ohio return or select full-year resident?

What income are you claiming for Ohio?

I selected "full year resident". I do not have any move-in/move-out dates or any other states listed. The amount I'm trying to claim is Block 1 from my W-2.

I went back and rechecked the information again. It always takes me to a screen saying that: "Schedule A: Line 26 Military pay received by OH residents should be blank. You indicated that you are a Nonresident of Ohio. You cannot claim the Military deduction that is allowed for a full-year Ohio resident."

Except I didn't indicate anything non-Ohio except my mailing address. Every other entry shows Ohio for the full duration of the year (for my entire life actually).

If you are Active Duty Military, did you state that Ohio is your Home of Record? Go through the questions in MY INFO and make sure you indicate you are active duty and when it asks for the state of your residence 12/31/2019, indicate Ohio. See if that changes for you.

Dave,

Yes, my information indicating I'm an Ohio resident and active duty military member is correctly entered. I also went back multiple times to check that it is marked correctly to reflect this.

Using a desktop version follow these steps as a workaround.

1.  Click "Forms"  at top right of page

2.  Find "OH Schedule A" in the your list of forms on the left hand side

3.  If not there, click "Open Form" and the OH drop down

4.  Click the IT 1040 drop down

5.  Locate the Schedule A and click to open it

6.  Go to line 26 and enter the military pay that was earned as an OH resident while stationed outside of OH

You can then go back to "Step-by-Step" and go through the OH interview; you should see the deduction now at the top of your OH summary page.

How do I make the TurboTax program recognize that as a military member, I am an Ohio resident with a mailing address outside of the state?

DMarkM1,

Thanks for taking the time to reply and give some guidance. I haven't had any problems entering the Line 26 amount, and my estimated refund amount is accurate (including all military pay). The issue is within the TurboTax software. When I go through the internal review process of TurboTax online it flags my state return and says that I'm a non-resident and therefore not allowed to claim the resident military deduction. I manually pre-checked my state tax form (as if I were going to print it and file by snail mail) and it's correct. It shows that I am a full-time resident of Ohio and Schedule A, Line 26 is accurate. At this point, I think my only option is to just print and file the old-fashioned way since the computer error is preventing e-file.

You could also try to e-file the Federal and mail the state since it appears e-filing the state form is the issue.
