You are being charged because you are using Self-Employed--- one of the paid versions of online software.

 

 

 

WHY DO I HAVE TO PAY?  I WANT THE FREE EDITION

 

The information that you can enter in Free Edition is pretty limited now.  Thanks to the new tax laws that began for 2018 returns, there are no more simple Form 1040EZ or 1040A's.  Everything goes on a Form 1040 that has three extra "schedules" with it, and if you need any of those schedules, you are not able to use the Free Edition.  Using the standard deduction instead of itemizing does NOT mean you will not need any of those schedules.https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/4511011-what-happened-to-the-1040a-and-1040ez

When we filed we agreed to a $40 charge to file but $60 plus were deducted from my Federal return and $80 was deducted from my son's federal return.

Did you choose to have TT fees deducted from your Federal refund?  (Remember that if you did that, you also agreed to an extra refund processing fee of $39.99 or $44.99 in CA)

I feel I was possibly scamed by Turbotax system this year after being a customer for at least the last seven years. Allow me toexplain.

I purchased a Deluxe program from a retailer (Sams Club).  When I entered my CD , I thought it loaded properly so when I completed my tax , I attempted to file.  Instead of getting a free file I was charged a fee.  In addition to being charged a fee, I was charged a fee for state tax too.  On top of it all, I was charged a service fee.  When I attempted to get a refund from the retailer, of couurse I was denied because the CD had been opened.  I was totally discusted by the whole ordeal. The system never allowed me to enter any license code, it went immediately to I guess the free file system without me knowing and treated me accordingly.

@Dissatisfieduser2024 It sounds like you got confused and instead of using the CD//download software you purchased at Sam's Club, you used online software.    That was a user error.

 

Did you post here or contact customer support when it charged you?   We could have helped.

 

 

We see people get confused and they keep logging in to online software which will require them to pay at the end.   You need to use the desktop software.   One way to tell if you are using the right software---your tool bar.   Online software has the toolbar in a black vertical column on the left side of the screen.   Desktop software has the tools up on the top of your TT screen.

 

 

You appear to be posting from online software instead of the desktop CD/download software that the license code is for.  If you are using online, you are using the wrong program.  You need to switch to the desktop software to get what you paid for.  You have to download it, update it and open it up from your own hard drive to use it.

Thank you for your input. I simply posted here. At the time I wasn't aware any support existed for my matter.  That's why I attempted to return the product to the retailer.You're right.  It apparently was a user.  I'm 75 years old and not too familiar with some things when it omes to this program.  In retrospect, if what happened to me is an error commomly made by users, The program, in all fairness,  should be corrected to permit customers to correct logging in before they proceed to any online program which will allow them to continue without acknowledgement.  Otherwise turbotax/intuit is making unearned money off what is know to be a common error.  Not just to seniors who are unfamaliar with the process, but any unknowing customer.
