How do I cancel my e-file?

You complete your tax return by finishing all 3 Steps in the File section. In Step 3, to e-file your tax return, you must click on the large Orange button labeled "Transmit my returns now".

After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.

Once a tax return has been e-filed it cannot be canceled, retrieved or changed.  The IRS will not be accepting any 2019 tax return until on and after January 27.

If you actually hit the transmit button.....You can't.

You effectively put it in the mailbox at the Post Office.

Now you wait until the IRS "starts" processing the week of 27 January.  (no guarantee how many days later they will actually pull yours.  sometimes they pull some test files earlier).

1)  IF..if the IRS rejects your efile, then you can just EDIT your tax file and resubmit.  DO NOT Amend in this situation. (IF the IRS rejects, the state forms don't go to the state either).

2) IF...if...the IRS "Accepts" what you filed, then you will be stuck going thru the Amend process to correct everything.  And you have to print and paper-mail in the amended forms yourself at the Post office  .   Don't amend until you get your refund, or pay the balance due form the first filing....and don't do anything to amend until the end of February.

We repeat this many times...NEVER file before mid February....1 March is safer.  (Unless you are a victim if ID theft...but even then 1 Feb is better)

How do I cancel my e-file?

I e filed my 2019 return last night and need to make corrections to it. The only info I can find is that canceling an e file is not possible. The IRS won't even be open for 2 more weeks. How can I pull my e file back and mail it in?

An e-filed tax return cannot be canceled, retrieved or changed.  You will have to wait for the IRS to either accept or reject the tax return.

How do I cancel my e-file?

I have submitted for e-file my federal return and each time it gets rejected due to an incorrect AGI. This AGI came directly from my last years 2018 turbo tax e-file. I will assume the AGI the IRS has on file differs. So, I attempted to create an account on the IRS web site to see what it had on file and my accound got locked because something was wrong. I went over the information I entered and it is absolutely correct. The only thing I can think of is my last name is two separate words.

So, I have a rejected e-file, I can't call anyone and, I cannot paper file which was the recommended solution. So I have a rejected e-file I will play roulette with the IRS site and everyone is hunkered down cause of covid. ANy suggestions is appreciated.

Comments/Suggestions:

1)  The AGI must be from the original accepted e-file that you submitted last year, so if you made any amendments, you can't use the later amended AGI...only the original one.  Look at your PDF of last year's first-filed tax return, and use line 7 of the 2018 form 1040.

2)  If you filed last year late...on paper thru the mail try an AGI of zero .  (You did say you e-filed last year though....try a zero anyhow).

3) last name two words.....same two-words as last year shouldn't cause a problem as long as they were entered the same way ..... but who knows what "improvements" they've made to name formats since last year.

Other than that...switch to file-by mail and take it to the Post Office.

You said you can't, but didn't say why...you have until 15 July.   You should be abler to find a way...somehow...unless living in, say,  Kazakhstan....but even there there are US embassies/consulates tah might provide a means for mailing.

How do I cancel my e-file?

Thank you but entry of 0 did not work. So I am stuck. I attempted to sign up with the irs but it keep rejecting me and then locking my account. All information I entered is accurate. So because I did not file last year and did a paper filling using turbo tax. I have no idea what the agi is and therefore I cannot get the croon stimulus because they use either 2018 or 2019. All the offices are closed and it appears the irs has gone silent. Been filing for 50 years, turbo since the 1980,s. If I paper file then it will take way to long.

Well, if you've been filing taxes for that long, you may be on SS now.  IF so, they may send out your stimulus check anyhow based solely on your SS  (direct deposit too...unless you are getting a paper SS check).

Other than that.....sorry, I have no other fix suggestions for you. IF you do need to file 2019 taxes, because you have significant income, other than SS income, then you still need to file at some point in the coming weeks-months...on paper thru the mail sound like all you are left with doing.  Maybe it stinks to have to do so, but i have no other solutions to suggest.

How do I cancel my e-file?

Thank you so much for your advice. I finally called my congressman and they said the same thing. Check should go out in the next week.

Heres the other problem. I cannot efile till this situation is resolved. It’s possible next year, but then if I paper file this year what’s to say the irs will not screw up again. Next I attempted to checkout if I would receive a check and when I entered my info they responded with I did not exist. So, I attempted to create an account on the irs site entered in my info correctly and they locked me out like, I already have an account. So, instead of creating an account I attempted to log in and they redirected me to verify and then locked me out for 24 hours. So I repeated this a couple of times and each time I get locked out. So, I tried to look for technical support and of course there is none and, the local office is closed. Now if I was delinquent and on my death bed I’m sure they would be hounding me.

Again thank you!

How do I cancel my e-file?

They have already accepted my efile

How do I cancel my e-file?

@lilman777

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
