I am in similar situation now. I have been filing my tax return using turbo tax for ages. I got married in feb 2019 with my wife who has been here on visitors Visa. I am filing my 2019 tax return jointly. She doesn't have SSN and IRS won't give her ITIN number unless I submit my return along with W7 form. Turbo tax needs her SSN or ITIN number before I can file the tax. It seems I can not file electronically. I need to add some fake number, print it out my tax return and erase it and submit it in the IRS office
You will have to file by mail (this is an IRS requirement) or submit your return to an IRS office accompanied by Form W-7 this year.
When using TurboTax, ignore the errors about the missing Social Security Number for your spouse; it is not necessary to enter a fake one. TurboTax will alert you that it has found issues. To proceed indicate "Continue anyway" on the screens where it asks you about them. It will allow you to print the return with no number for your spouse so that you can file for the ITIN.
The IRS ITIN office will add the new ITIN to your tax return, and then they will forward it for processing.
Be sure that you send your entire tax form with signatures along with the Form W-7 together in one package to the address on the Form W-7 Instructions.
Next year, you will be able to file electronically.
I used to efile previous years through turbotax. Now I have a new born(born in INDIA, currently in US) and am aware that ITIN necessary for kid. So should I file federal along with new ITIN application in local IRS and then wait to file state? correct me.
Thanks,
Abi
@abhijithhr , my pref. would be to file by mail , include the application for ITIN for the child ( I am assuming the child is on a dependent visa ) and probably wait to file the State. You can also file the State by mail and attach a copy of the federal filing -- that way they should be able to process your refund knowing that you have filed the federal ( and it is in the processing queue ).
