Permission for what?  What are you trying to do?

How can I change permissions on a file that does not yet exist?

So I had just started my return, and I want to save the file in the directory location where previous years' returns are kept. When I go to "File" and then "Save" on my Mac, I get the following message:

The document “Untitled” could not be saved as “Thomas Arthur 23”. You don’t have permission.

To view or change permissions, select the item in the Finder and choose File > Get Info.

When I go to Finder to locate the file (so I'll be able to change the permissions so I can save it), I realize it's not going to be found as it doesn't yet exist as a file. I've been using Turbo Tax for almost 20 years to do my returns, and I've never come across this problem before. What should I do?

How can I change permissions on a file that does not yet exist?

Well, yes and no.

I ended up deleting everything I had started in Turbo Tax, then tried again to save the tax file in the same place (external drive directory that contains all my Turbo Tax tax files). No luck, even though tax files and PDF copies from 2015 to 2022 all exist there.

I finally generated another 2023 tax file and saved it on my Mac's hard drive in my Documents directory along with various other files/documents. I was finally successful in saving it there, using my preferred naming convention, and I've edited or added new info to it via Turbo Tax.

My question, however, remains: Why was Turbo Tax Premier 2023, which had been installed correctly, refusing to allow me to save tax files where I've been saving them for years? These are directories where I have all permissions as administrator, and always have. I haven't completed my return as I'm still waiting for a number of 1099's, so I'm still a little nervous . . .
