The exact same thing happened to me. I have S corp and TT said you must upgrade because you are self employed. It is because I had paid self employed health insurance premium and this is deductible on the 1040. I hit the upgrade button out of frustration to see the cost. I think I'll call and request a cred and use another product next year. It's a shame TT and Intuit tried this kind of "money grab". I'm sure many folks just paid it and didn't both to fight. I'm a fighter. Disappointing TT. Now I have more work to do Monday instead of just filing. :(
ATTENTION ALL : use the superior downloaded program instead of the pricer online version ... when using the downloaded version you only need the Deluxe for everything (Basic if you don't need a state return) ... this will save you $$.
Delux says $80, is there an additional charge later for state? Also, can I use my pretty much completed online file or do I have to re-enter all my info? I've got the online return ready to file - I spoke with the TT people Monday morning to complain about the upgrade charge and they opened a ticket, gave me a case number and then never reached back out to me...shocker. Great customer services...I've been using TT for 20 years and the upgrade at moment of file is a total cash grab.
@JCMA25 Are you asking about switching to the Desktop program? Yes it can be done. And there is a $25 fee to efile a state return but you can print and mail state for free.
You can move your Online file to the Desktop program and continue without paying for Online or needing to reenter your info. If you already paid for the Online version you can ask them for the Desktop program. And you can buy a lower version Desktop program. All the Desktop programs have the same forms. You just get more help and guidance in the higher versions.
To continue in the desktop version see this…….

How do I save my TurboTax Online return as a tax data file?
After you get the program installed the first thing to do before you open your tax return .tax file is to update the program and install any state programs you had. Then open your file. So you first might need to start a fake return to be able to download the state program (go to FILE - NEW). Just enter some basic personal info like your name and address then click on the State tab at the top and it should ask if you want to download the state program.
@VolvoGirl Thanks! Two follow up questions. If I need assistance, can I simply pay the upgrade differential? Also, on my computer I already have TT 2019, will TT 2022 show up as as separate application or just a sub of the already installed TT? Thanks again.
You won't need to upgrade. You can ask questions here or call support.
Yes it will be a separate application/program. So you will still have 2019 program installed.
I make estimated tax payments via my S Corp as VA passed Pass Through Entity Tax bill last year. I make a VA Tax payment when I filed the S Corp 9/15/2023 which was a return payment, not an estimated payment. Where does this go in TT?
I suspect I could simply put the payment into the field " How much of your 2022 state taxes did you pay when you filed your tax extension".
Technically it's not an extension payment, it's a return payment, but it seams the only logical place to put the payment. Its certainly NOT an estimated payment so I'm not sure where else to put it.
