My 23 y/o son received a 1099 misc and a W- 2. Incomes of approx $1200 and $2975 respectively. Should he file?

Yes, he's going to need to file because of the 1099-MISC. If the income is entered in box 7, it's considered Self-Employment income, and he'd need to pay Self-Employment tax if his net self-employment income is $400 or greater.

FREEDOM EDITION

You cannot enter a 1099Misc or self-employment income when you are using the Free Edition.  If you qualify, there is another free software program available from TurboTax which will allow you to enter self-employment income.
