Form 8606 Bug

I know I can get around this bug by going out of Step by Step mode and going into Forms mode, but there's a navigation problem on Form 8606. The form asks "Any non-deductible contributions to xx IRA?" I answer yes, and press continue.

Nothing happens. It just stays on the same screen.

The data required can be entered manually on the 8606, and the carryover from the previous year (if any) does populate on the form.

But if you're not familiar with Forms mode and have made contributions into a non-deductible IRA, you're stuck.

Form 8606 Bug

Yes  you have to keep clicking the CONTINUE button the number of times for the number of 1099R forms you entered. Like 2, 3 or more. clicks

Form 8606 Bug

Okay, I finally got the "continue" button to work.  Before, I would press the "continue" and then just sit and wait.  In prior years, there would be a bit of hesitation and then it would move to the next input screen.  This year I would press it, wait about 45 seconds with no luck.  Then I would press it again, wait 45 seconds, no luck.  And then do that same thing over and over.

Well, I was on the phone with a TurboTax tech support person and he put me on hold to escalate this issue to a Tier 2 person.  So, while on hold, I just kept pressing the "continue" button over and over again with virtually no pause between pushes.  And after about the 20th push, TurboTax suddenly moved into the next input screen.

I firmly believe the software got tired of resisting me and finally let me through to the next input screen.  Fearing the program would seek retribution at some future date, I immediately entered the information I needed to and saved the file.

Form 8606 Bug

An update ... per the response shown above I decided to just press the Continue button repeatedly. Eventually it worked!

Then I read in another topic that some users counted the times they pressed "Continue". They have concluded that it takes the same number of Continues as the number of 1099-R's they have. I have five 1099-R's so I tested it. Sure enough, it moved to the next screen after my fifth press of Continue. What a feature!

Form 8606 Bug

This has to be a software programming change between 2023 and 2024.  And a poorly written one at that.  Why?  Because I have seven 1099-Rs.  I also had seven in 2023.  In 2023, it only took one press of the “Continue” button to move to the next input screen.  But this year it takes seven?  If those seven pushes are unavoidable, absolutely necessary, and expected, then the screen would say so.  Somewhere, either directly above or directly below the “Continue” button, it would say “Press the Continue button equal to the number of 1099-Rs that you entered”.  Since it doesn’t, I have to assume TurboTax made software code change and got an unexpected result.  They didn’t fully test it before they released the software to us.  They probably only had one 1099-R in their test file, so, of course, everything worked with just one push on the “Continue” button.

My guess would be that this issue somehow relates to the new question TurboTax asks when you enter your 1099-R from IRAs.  The one where it asks you “What is the required minimum distribution for your account in 2024”.  That question is also confusing a lot of people since you are not sure whether to enter the calculated RMD for that specific account or what you actually took out that account.  And the screen offers no explanation of what you should enter.

Form 8606 needs to know your total IRA withdrawals and your ROTH conversions, if any.  You would think that the TurboTax software keeps a running total of those two numbers as you enter each 1099-R. And when you say you are done entering 1099-Rs, it has what it needs to fill out those two lines on Form 8606.  That fact that you have to press the “Continue” button equal to the number of 1099-Rs you entered leads me to believe that each time you press the button, the software is going back to one of your 1099-Rs to check something or pick up a number.  Something it didn’t have to do last year.

Anyway, just my thoughts on what this issue could possibly be.  I could be completely wrong.  Maybe a TurboTax employee will weigh in here and tell us what is really going on and how it’s going to be fixed.

Form 8606 Bug

For what it is worth, it appears that the patch on 1/30/2025 fixed the problem? When I checked today, I only had to hit continue once to go to input form.
