Federal and State Taxes

I received Unemployment from State of NJ but received it while traveling (no residence) and then I moved to South Carolina while receiving this Unemployment from 08/01/21 thru 09/08/21.

1. Do I submit my total Unemployment Compensation on federal?

2. Do I only file a SC state income tax return and not an NJ one?

Federal and State Taxes

Total unemployment is taxable for federal in 2021. There is no partial exclusion like there was for 2020.

  1. Type unemployment in Search in the top right
  2. Select Jump to unemployment. You can upload or type in Form 1099-G.

Unemployment is not taxable to New Jersey. You only need to file a part-year South Carolina income tax return if you have no other NJ income except unemployment.

Report the NJ unemployment you received while living in SC on your part-year SC tax return.
