After filing for 2022, my tax return was rejected, and I received a message stating "Error: Spouse SSN and Spouse Name Control in the return must match the e-File database." I've double-checked, and my spouse's SSN and name are correct in my forms. Last year was the first time I included him on my tax return (filing separately), and I can see his name and SSN were also correct in last year's tax return.
What can I do to let the IRS know that the information provided is correct?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.
Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed. Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead.
What is the rejection code or rejection message?
If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2021 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2021 AGI might not be in the IRS system. Try using zero instead.
If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year. The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
Thank you. The rejection message is "Spouse SSN and Spouse Name Control in the return must match the e-File database," so I don't think it has to do with AGI.
Is it possible that my 2021 return has not been processed, and that it is for this reason that my spouse's name and SSN are unknown to the IRS? 2021 was the first time they were included on my return, as we were married in that year.
I believe I need to call the IRS, but I live outside of the US. Is anyone aware of an alternative system, or a phone number that's toll-free internationally?
Calling the IRS will not help you. Whenever you have a mismatch for a SSN on a tax return, you cannot e-file. The only way to file it is by mail.
You should check the actual, physical social security card for the wife and verify that the last name and Social Security Number match what is on the return. If she has not changed her name with SSA, then she needs to file with her maiden name.
