Error New Jersey Box 14 UI/UF/SWF, NJ DI, and FLI Exceeds Amount

Hello,

TurboTax is not letting me file because I am getting errors that my values in New Jersey W2 Box 14 exceed the maximum amount. TurboTax is telling me:

  • New Jersey FLI cannot be greater than $29
  • New Jersey UI/WF/SWF cannot be greater than $148
  • New Jersey SDI cannot be greater than $60

All 3 of my values are above these amounts, however, NJ Division of Taxation Website claims the maximum amounts for 2020 are:

  • UI/WF/SWF — $150.03;
  • DI — $350.74;
  • FLI — $215.84.

And all 3 of my values are below these amounts. I called customer service and they insist its a problem with my W2 and when I speak with my employer they assure me my W2 is correct.

Can someone please provide a solution to this issue? I assume the issue is with TurboTax because the values in my W2 are congruent with what NJ state claims.

Hello, I am having the same issue here with the FLI amount.

Below is more information that I found online about New Jersey's FLI maximum amount.

Based on everything that I am finding online, my W-2 is correct and TurboTax should to be updated to reflect these changes.

Employee 2020 SUI-TDI-FLI tax rates

According to the Department's website, the following employee rates are in effect for the remainder of 2019 and for calendar year 2020:

  • SUI-employee. Employers must continue to withhold employee SUI taxes through December 31, 2019 from employee wages earned up to the SUI taxable wage base of $34,400 at the worker SUI rate of 0.425% (includes the 0.0425% Workforce Development and Supplemental Workforce Fund surcharge). The rate continues at 0.425% for calendar year 2020, on wages earned up to $35,300. Based on the 2020 taxable wage base of $35,300, an employee's maximum SUI contribution for 2020 will be $150.03.
  • TDI. The TDI rate continues at 0.17% through December 31, 2019 and increases as of January 1, 2020 (for calendar year 2020) to 0.26%. Based on the increased 2020 taxable wage base of $134,900, up from $34,400 for 2019, an employee's maximum TDI contribution for 2020 will increase to $350.74, up from $58.48 for calendar year 2019.
  • FLI. The FLI rate continues at 0.08% for the remainder of 2019 and increases as of January 1, 2020 (for calendar year 2020) to 0.16%. Based on the increased 2020 taxable wage base of $134,900, up from $34,400 for 2019, an employee's maximum FLI contribution for 2020 will be $215.84, up from $27.52 for 2019.

The NJ tax forms are not finalized yet....and appear to be using last year's % and max values.

So, you/we won't know if the NJ values have been properly updated to the new 2020 values until AFTER 28 January  (expected date...not promised date).

Come back on (say) 1 February, run thru the W-2 and error check again at that time to see if the software still complains  (If you are suing the Desktop software, make sure you run a full software update first).

______________________

And PLEASE Don't attempt to file anything until after 12 Feb....the IRS isn't doing anything on tax filings until that day or after......so filing early is a total waste of time and can't be called back if you :"forgot" or "missed" something.

If your amount exceed the recommended amount your state is requiring like this: "New Jersey FLI cannot be greater than $29", you need to split the $ amount to not exceed $29.00.

Ex: Box 14 shows $48.30, you will need to add an additional box. Click Additional Box and input $24.15 in one box and $24.15 in another box to equal to $48.30. Your last box you would select NJ FLI for each split boxes.

You will keep adding additional boxes until it reaches the amount total to claim for that box. Each box should not exceed $29 for FLI. Hope this helps.

Thanks, although according to NJ Division of Taxation Website the maximum amounts for 2020 are:

  • UI/WF/SWF — $150.03;
  • DI — $350.74;
  • FLI — $215.84.

all of which I am below.  The limits that TurboTax is holding me to seem to be incorrect.
